WMO president is on board with Antarctica, Greenland and sea level rise!

#ClimateScientists often underestimate the importance of the WMO - it's not as visible to us as IPCC say and the focus has long been on #WeatherForecasts but #ClimateScience is very much built on the infrastructure of #weather - the in-situ observations, the satellites and the numerical models originally developed for forecasting. #ClimateDiary

rahmstorf - New study: the Atlantic overturning circulation AMOC “is on tipping course”.

New study suggests the Atlantic overturning circulation AMOC “is on tipping course”
      from Stefan
A new paper was published in Science Advances today. Its title says what it is about: Physics-based early warning signal shows that AMOC is on tipping course. The study follows one by Danish colleagues which made headlines last July, likewise looking for early warning signals for approaching an AMOC tipping point (we discussed it here), but using rather different data and methods. The new study by van Westen et al. is a major ...

The pinnacle of "return-to-office" ("RTO") stupidity is requiring people to be in the office some number of days per week, with first-come-first-served hot-desking. Leads to the fact that people who are ostensibly in the office "for improved collaboration" now sit at desks spread all over the office space, and then use their remote collaboration tools from the office. Including video calls. Managers implementing this sort of policy deserve a bucket of ice water dumped over their heads.

Danes who are interested in origins of the modern population of #Denmark might find this paper in the collection especially interesting.

It seems that all those tall and blonde #vikings came from Asia about 5000 years ago and wiped out the local population.

Integrated data, including 100 human genomes from the Mesolithic, Neolithic and Early Bronze Age periods show that two major population turnovers occurred over just 1,000 years in Neolithic Denmark, resulting in dramatic changes in the genes, diet and physical appearance of the local people, as well as the landscape in which they lived.

The Forgotten Breakthrough of a Female Scientist - City Country Culture - Watch the full documentary | ARTE in English
In the United States, the city of Troy - between the Great Lakes region and New England - has been a place of industrial innovation for more than a hundred years, thanks to its proximity to the Hudson River. In the 19th century, it was a science hub. It was there that scientist Eunice Foote discovered the existence of greenhouse gases - without her, we would never have understood climate change. But her name and achievement has faded into obscurity.

I recall enjoying the first one as an 10 (ish?) year old, so perhaps I've just moved out of the demographic or maybe it really is a truly terrible film concept?

Most of the specialised computers/servers at work are named for DWEMs* (or pagan gods/goddesses), so at casual lunch conversation yesterday we brainstormed a few #WomenInSTEM names for the next generation of servers (we came up with Meitner, Hammer + Lehman, maybe Curie is too obvious) - but why stick with white women, what other more diverse candidates should we have for naming servers etc after? Would love some more suggestions to take to IT.
