What deep held flaw is built into the human psyche that we would prefer to consider the monstrous technologies of #geoengineering rather than cut any fossil fuel use?
WMO president is on board with Antarctica, Greenland and sea level rise!
#ClimateScientists often underestimate the importance of the WMO - it's not as visible to us as IPCC say and the focus has long been on #WeatherForecasts but #ClimateScience is very much built on the infrastructure of #weather - the in-situ observations, the satellites and the numerical models originally developed for forecasting. #ClimateDiary
Kicking off the #WMO#polar and high mountain regions committee meeting in Oslo this morning. Long pre-meeting on #Antarctica yesterday to determine policy and strategy was pretty successful. Hoping it will get passed by full panel today. WMO president Celeste Sauto giving us an online welcome. #PHORS24#ClimateDiary
The paper by Dutch colleagues adds more weight to recent warnings, such as the OECD Climate Tipping Points report of 2022 and the Global Tipping Points report published 2023.

My favourite part of this quote about #ice is the reference.. 😁 #Frostodon#icetodon https://fediscience.org/@agrinsted/111787871131891751 agrinsted - "ICE IS a remarkably strong solid. When its normalized strength (σs/μ) is compared with that of other solids at the same fraction of their melting point (T/TM), ice is found to be among the strongest and hardest. " (ashby and frost, 1982)
https://fediscience.org/@Ruth_Mottram/111705895236414782 Ruth_Mottram - Ok mastodon, (or at least the part of it currently going through a big freeze), show me your strange ice pictures, your weird ice spikes, needle ice, hair ice and frazil ice, your beautiful ice crystals.
Is #icetodon a thing yet? It should be. I'll start. #NeedleIce in the park today.. typically forms.when ground is warm (above zero) and air temperature cold (well below zero).
Not exactly what I meant by show me your cool ice crystals...
Amazing. TIL that @arte the franco-german public service broadcaster in Europe has a completely open app showing their programmes. Here to celebrate is a beautiful short documentary about Eunice Newton Foote, including a re-enactment of her (now famous) experiments showing how #CarbonDioxide is a #GreenhouseGas. (TIL also that #UncleSam was actually a real person) #ClimateChange#eunicefoote#ArteTV
I recall enjoying the first one as an 10 (ish?) year old, so perhaps I've just moved out of the demographic or maybe it really is a truly terrible film concept?
Suggestions for a brain cleanse of a Christmas film please....?
"Today, rich countries have an opportunity to import youth, brains and dynamism. It may not last forever"
Interesting piece in the Economist on #migration. I don't agree with it all. But it's good to see people thinking practically instead of emotionally about it

Most of the specialised computers/servers at work are named for DWEMs* (or pagan gods/goddesses), so at casual lunch conversation yesterday we brainstormed a few #WomenInSTEM names for the next generation of servers (we came up with Meitner, Hammer + Lehman, maybe Curie is too obvious) - but why stick with white women, what other more diverse candidates should we have for naming servers etc after? Would love some more suggestions to take to IT. #EDI#Diversity
