The USA's political and military doctrine has been, for over a century, that they get to control the "Western Hemisphere" (ie, the American Continent, including Latin America). This was justified on two ground, on one hand, that the resources of the continent were for the US to use ("America for the Americans"), and the second one that the influence of European powers was to remain in their side of the Atlantic.

Maduro, and Chavismo, are an episode, but the deep reasons for American interventionism have little to do with anything Hugo Chavez or Maduro did. It has to do with the Monroe Doctrine (and its revisions, including Trump's) and the needs of Imperialism. The USA can't have the international projection it has if their "back yard" is not "secured" first. That's why Latin American political thinkers, including conservative ones, have always signaled the US as a curse.

In he end, he deep ideological justification for the attack on #Venezuela is white supremacism. Is the idea that the USA are above all other countries, that international law only counts when it's profitable for them, that there are two standards, one for Western imperialism and another one for the rest of the world.

Not only it's a canonical book on media studies, you can't pretend you have media literacy unless you're acquainted with the key concepts the authors present about how the public's construction of reality is skewed and (quite literally) manufactured by the mass media, which is to say by the elites that own the mass media, the government included.

Anyone that truly believes the propaganda spin that Nicolas Maduro is an "iron fist dictator" should look up the videos of the current repressions in Peru and Ecuador and ask themselves why aren't those videos on American newscasts, but Maduro is.

The answer is easy, the US prompts up dictatorial regimes everywhere, from Egypt to Ecuador, from Saudi Arabia to Peru, and the only bloody tyrants they complain about are those who aren't in their payroll.
