Though that tale explored in depth (particularly with mention of Gary Kildall and Digital Research which weren't mentioned) could probably be an episode in and of itself.
The IBMPC was definitely not designed to be commodity hardware, and it wasn't thanks to M$/Bill Gates nor Paul Allen things ended up the way they did.
@adamconover Ticketmaster/LiveNation consider my phone number to be invalid.
Which, they utilize for "verification" to login to their website in recent years.
Which effectively means: I can no longer purchase Ticketmaster/Live Nation event tickets without using a scalper (and having tried that once last year with deleterious results even paying for "insurance" I won't be wasting my time or money on them again).
So they're that much worse for me personally or maybe it's a blessing in disguise?
@adamconover meanwhile many years ago I started seeing how much I could play of LotZ without killing anything as a gedankenexperiment to explore non violent methodologies in video games.
Turns out it is possible to get the Magic Sword!
But a rewinding emulator and some trickery with the LET'S MAKE MONEY MAKING GAME seemed awfully useful to make that happen. ;)
@roadriverrail IMHO, that tracks. Personally I find that VMs/etc. are EXCEEDINGLY USEFUL for dev.
By the same token: they are the OPPOSITE of what I ever want in prod.
For CI frameworks & such? Yes, please: I will take performance hits for some ease of reproducibility on recreating bare build environments to make sure codes' assumptions are doing what they need to be doing.
Alas, too many took the "ease of dev" into Ops & there were & are GOOD REASONS to not EVER cross those streams. @miah
