The entertainment companies are themselves the reason newer media like bluray never took off like DVD. Look at the state of bluray on linux. It's a mess because they wanted to make sure you buy certain hardware and they retain the ability to lock you out of physical media that you bought through legal means.

PSA for anyone using #QEMU #KVM for #SingleGPUPassthrough
systemctl stop display-manager
Guides are all over the net suggesting hooks scripts invoking pci devices, unloading/loading kernel modules, and other unnecessary things. Here's my current hook script for starting the VM:That's it. And the reverse for teardown:
systemctl start display-manager#IOMMU groups still apply, and you need to pass the correct PCI devices to your VM, but everything else is handled automatically.
Disclaimer that this is how it works currently for my AMD card. I did have a working setup with my NVIDIA card that did unload/load kernel modules, however it seems things have come a long way since I set that up.

Switching from #nvidia to #amd GPU today. Hoping I do this drivers switch correctly, and can reconfigure #QEMU without too much hassle :dude_doubt:

The irony is they're finding their law to be unenforceable without draconian restrictions for everyone, and even then, kids still find a way around it. The problem is the draconian restrictions for everyone was always the point.

Phase 1: force AI adoption by removing other options to not use it
Phase 2: make computing unaffordable for the masses by buying up all stock of components, driving up demand while building datacenters.
Phase 3: further increase demand for and adoption of your cloud computing/AI datacenter by making people reliant on crappy cloud PCs/PCaaS devices with little horsepower to do much else
Phase 4: use telemetry/spyware in said datacenters to surveil/harvest data from every user of said cloud PCs and use it to serve hyper-targeted ads (everyone knows people love hyper-targeted ads) and send drone fleets to respond to/harass dissenters domestic terrorists
Phase 5: profit

I've seen this chick before. She had an eating disorder and took Ozempic without prescription and fucked herself up. By her own telling of the story -

It means they no longer need the buying power of regular consumers. When wealth consolidates into fewer and fewer hands, the many don't factor into profits as much anymore. They can just cut the rest of us loose because who cares

Filled my HDDs and looking to upgrade to a proper NAS. I don't want to build a custom box.
Would prefer something open that I can install TrueNAS, but I'm open to arguments in favor of something more locked down like Synology.
Use case is as a media server, serving video and music over local network. I try to minimize transcoding of streams, but the ability to do so would be nice for things with subtitles and such. Currently have 10 TB capacity, mirrored. Looking at 4-5 bay, RAID 5 or 6.
Question is: Asustor, QNAP, UGREEN, iX Systems (though this would be top of budget, and honestly hardware is older, but it does offer 8 cores, and ECC memory), or something else entirely? I've been down the rabbit hole and I'm overwhelmed with options.
