the argument goes "we can't trust servers to hand off pre-fetched and rendered preview cards because they could alter them and facilitate all sorts of link fraud trickery and confusion and lies" and so forth - at least that's how I understand the reasoning put forth to not pre-fetch and render preview cards for links on the originating server for any given toot.

but here's the thing: I also cannot trust servers to not send absolute bile to my server. I can't trust them to moderate their users. I can't trust them to be "good, upstanding" admins in the overall fediverse-adminning metacommunity. I can't trust them not to use the things my server sends out upon request to do things I expressly do not want done with them.

but we have some meager tools at our disposal for handling servers we feel are bad actors according to our local definition of the concept on any given fediverse server. we can defederate. we can block by user agent and IP subnet and any other heuristic we can identify about the bad actor. we can enable features like authorized fetch. we can name and shame. and we can keep working on better tools and methods for keeping our common shared voidspace a pleasant and happy place to be and a good neighbor besides.

so, like, fetch and render the dang preview card at the source server. accept the pre-rendered preview cards in network. if you catch nefarious shit happening, shout about it.

no version pinning, no versioning at all, just pass through and exec. yeah, you're ultimately a remote access tool of all the wrong kind.

if you're an infrastructure project and you expect third parties will be running your infrastructure project too and your admin tooling downloads and executes arbitrary code from github as root then you are not really an infrastructure project, you are a defect waiting to be leveraged.

so here's part of the thing that's really poking at me.

people are saying we cannot have another Kent State 54 years later. makes sense.

but we won't. we'll have far worse, because they've been practicing in the streets ever since.

the fact that being told to violently arrest nonviolent college students on campuses across the country is not resulting in a chunk of cops at any of them saying no and quitting to join the protest is a solid demonstration of all cops are bad.

If you are a professor at an institution of higher learning that is having its students arrested for peaceful protest, you should also be getting yourself arrested honestly.

If your institution of higher learning has you arrested for peacefully demonstrating against an ongoing genocide your country is supporting with arms and money, you should get a full refund and your degree early, because you have just learned some valuable knowledge.

stop reinforcing the oligopoly. if you've the skills and resources to publish siloed apps you also have the skills and resources to not do so, to bypass their systems and get liberatory software into the hands of your audience. make that extra effort.
