@technomancy We've had this discussion you and I, many times. I love the Claude theory. But what I'm saying right now is that we should choose the name we like better. Cloud is cooler, agreed.

Aeris is a better name than Aerith. It sounds like the real Greek name Eris. Aerith sounds like a lisp.
Both names are the same to Japanese ears, so we should be allowed to pick which one sounds better to our English ears. Final Fantasy is full of names that got messed up like that in the Japanese-English roundtrip. Barret was supposed to be Bullet. Rydia is probably Lydia. We have no idea what Ogre Nix/Ogyrenyx/Organics is supposed to be.
Nomura has no idea. We, English speakers, should be allowed to pick the names we like better. It's all a bunch of made-up fantasy nonsense, anyway.

@lanodan I tried bzr once. It had some good ideas.
Remember when we were afraid that Canonical was going to eat the world with proprietary Launchpad and force us all to use bzr?

@ledoian @lanodan I've seen one usage of darcs: in the beginning, it was popular to try it on Haskell code. The geordi C++ IRC bot was originally on darcs until one day when darcs had a problem and the maintainer switched to git (I don't remember the problem).

It is the year 2024. Civilisation has progressed little in the last 20 years. Git gangs rule the streets and all the code. There is scant hope of using any other version control system.
One quiet Friday night, I gently submit a bugfix to Mercurial. I am not completely alone. Yet.

Hey, #Emacs users, show me your emacs-uptime. No shame, no uptime too small.
It is time for M-x emacs-uptime <RET>!

I want a feature film like this.

> Dr Light and Dr Wily both had controlling shares in the same robotics, weapons, and construction companies in 20XX. Theyre both the bad guys perpetuating conflict for their own financial and technological gain.
New headcanon just dropped.

Finally landed a job, at a healthcare company. I had my second day today.
That was a rough job search, but I'm grateful to have landed back on my feet. I got a lot of practice interviewing!

Is the opening narration to #MegaMan 2 incorrect?
"In the year of 200X, a super robot named Megaman was created. Dr Light created Megaman to stop the evil desires of Dr Wily."
Mega Man already existed as Rock. He was Dr Wily's and Dr Light's lab assistance. After Dr Wily's first betrayal, Dr Light transformed Rock into Mega Man.
Does this mean that Mega Man was created at this point, or did he already exist before?

Serious question: what Canonical-led initiative has found true success?
Upstart?
Mir?
Launchpad?
bzr?
Snap?
Unity? (the desktop environment, not the game engine)
Multipass? -

Where did the i, j, k notation for indices begin?
My earliest clue is that it probably started when we started indexing our summations. Euler :euler: used ∑ for sums, but he didn't use indices. Fourier in 1823 did use indices. Was there someone between Euler and Fourier who also used indices in their summations?

Hey, mathematical pedagoguges, are they still teaching that differential equations class in university that's a bunch of 18th and 19th century tricks to produce closed-form solutions to a narrow zoo of equations, or is everything more oriented towards describing dynamics now?
Or do you just grab a computer and punch stuff into it and get pretty graphs?
