@thomasfuchs @purinkle Again, I respect your position and opinion, but it is my belief that those outcomes are either not realistic or they imply a bigger threat to the stability/viability of the project. I don't think we can complain that DHH's personal rants are endangering the community or preventing people from using Rails, while at the same time suggesting that a project fork would not do more damage overall to the exact same concerns.

Ensuring people from affected communities are involved in planning conferences is one way to avoid this situation. Is your conference’s steering committee exclusively ex-officio past conference organizers ? Is it therefore mostly cis straight white men? You should change that.

ibuprofen is among the medications i don't really take any more… it definitely aggravates my asthma. i got it compounded & still so. (tho it's compounded with RICE flour, which i think i might not tolerate, lollll. but getting it redone is $$$)

can't take cold meds either, they all have something i'm downright allergic to in them: microcrystalline cellulose or PEG, or they're not gluten-free.

I just changed the filter in my Flo Mask Pro, which I had changed just before our two days of 200+ AQI. I was out (and masked) for maybe 4-6 hours total.

The filter was visibly *darkened*, which I've never seen before.

(And the other guys who told her to just block.) He responded to a Black woman’s post about it feeling super white here and went on for like seven posts telling her how to speak and how he was helping her be better.

By not making this guy’s replies visible to most people bc of federation weirdness, the software plays a role, too.

How I see this happening:

* AGI gets falsely presented as a real thing. The singularitists amplify this.
* Snake-oil vendors pop up, offering supposedly AGI-based solutions for replacing whole swaths of jobs. Mid-2000s style outsourcing comes back in vogue.
* These fail utterly or get revealed as theranos-type scams backed by offshore labor.
* Public opinion turns sharply against CS generally, resulting in deep funding cuts, bad legislation, etc.

I am increasingly worried about the current AI hype cycle taking down all of computer science with it. The more I think about it, the field is on the verge of a legitimacy crisis from several root-causes.

I've seen some AI/ML people (Timnit, etc) talk about the need for an anti-AGI movement. I think that applies to #CS generally. If the public at large comes to equate CS with AGI, it will kill the whole field for a decade when AGI implodes.

* You just don't know how the Fediverse works!
