#Google, a spam shop. Yet another spammer has discovered Google Groups lets you import email addresses of people who never consented to being part of a list or uploaded to their platform. Just stop using it so I can block everything from Google, Gmail, and their half-baked websites.

@strypey Fifteen years for me. Every now and then I use it to test it as too many people are wedded to it and I need to see how we are performing. And in 2024 I used it a lot to monitor the disinformation being written about me, as Google is very good at indexing disinformation (ahead of legitimate content). But in normal circumstances, it hasn’t been my default since 2010.

@strypey I had some Duck Duck Go posts in 2010, which was how I could place the date, though I began de-Googling the year before. I remember having Google Buzz forced on us, not sure what year that was without looking it up. But that was another sign of Google enshittification.

@Em0nM4stodon Thank you! As a publisher, we donʼt track, but we did have some ads from networks that tracked. I made a commitment to our readers (not that any asked for this) that we would be tracker-free this year. I wrote to the ad networks to see if any would go along with this and got zero replies. So we removed all their ads. Now we just have ones we run ourselves with no trackers. Didnʼt seem particularly hard to do and I wish more would.

@Em0nM4stodon Thank you! Only Mastodonians have liked what we have done. We’ve had no press interest, and our readers don’t seem to care one way or the other, but we know we’ve done the right thing (because this is the way we would like to be treated when visiting websites).

@aral @joynewacc Thank you for doing your amazing work. I know it is difficult. I helped raise funds for one friend in Rafah, and while most people were pretty good, there was, of course, one guy (a dude from Israel) questioning whether my friend was real, and even if he was, the routes out of Rafah were blocked. He went to my friend’s website, posted a photo of him, trying to make the effort questionable. This dude failed, we raised the money, and my friend and his family are in Cairo.

Jesus knew the miracle of feeding the 5,000 would wind up being remembered thanks to the poisson distribution.

I very seldom let on that I have a law degree. Still remember one case where the lawyer for a big publishing house decided to go all arrogant on me over a dispute. Then I mentioned something like, ‘As a fellow legal expert specializing in IP I’m sure you can appreciate …’ in passing in an email. Boy did his tone change to a conciliatory one in the next email (since he knew his firm had dicked me around).
