  Returning to the University of British Columbia, FOSSY 2027 will be August 5-8th next year! The campus was enjoyed by all attendees and allowed us to connect with the local student and staff communities. Being close to the coast, mountains, and city allowed conference goers to explore the locality and even get to know the local free software community!

  Comprehensive Response to Bambu's AGPLv3 Violations
  
  Software Freedom Conservancy (“SFC”) announces a new initiative regarding the software right to repair for users and consumers of 3D printers manufactured by Bambu Lab. After recent news of violations of the Affero General Public License, version 3 (“AGPLv3”), SFC staff began a comprehensive AGPLv3 compliance investigation of both the userspace software and firmware on Bambu's devices. While the investigation is ongoing, two specific AGPLv3 violations have been confirmed.

  SFC signs open letter to Keep Android Open
  
  Today Software Freedom Conservancy joins many other organizations in signing an open letter to Google asking that Android continue to allow people to install what they want on their phones. Recent policy changes within Google will restrict installation options by requiring developers to register their legal names, adding new gatekeeping that can arbitrarily deny app installation or delete existing apps from your phone.

  People are talking about the Vizio suit!
  
  After the positive tentative ruling in our case against Vizio, we gathered in Orange County with our lawyers for what is likely the last hearing of 2025. Going into the hearing, the judge was leaning toward concluding that a request for source code — pursuant to an offer under the GPLv2 or LGPLv2.1 — constitutes a contract obligating the vendor to provide that code to the purchaser. The hearing yielded excellent press coverage, including from Tom Claburn of The Register and by Christine Hall in FOSS Force. The historic Software Freedom Conservancy v. Vizio, Inc. case continues in Superior Court in California!

SFC announced that we recently filed an updated Motion for Summary Adjudication
(similar to a Motion for Partial Summary Judgement in USA federal courts):

The motion asks the judge to summarily rule that SFC has a right as a third-party beneficiary under

  Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC) announces that we seek summary adjudication on a key issue in our case against the TV manufacturer, Vizio. Copyleft-next was relaunched this week by Richard Fontana and our own policy fellow, Bradley M. Kuhn. Fontana and Kuhn announced the relaunch to honor the many copyleft historical milestones recently: the eighteenth anniversary of GPLv3's publication this past Sunday, the thirty-fourth anniversary of GPLv2's publication in June, and the thirteenth anniversary of Fontana's original launch of copyleft-next this week.

  Everyone is asking the wrong questions about TikTok
  
  As we write this, everyone is wondering what will happen with TikTok in the next 48 hours. Social media as a phenomenon was designed to manufacture drama to sell advertising, and in this moment, the meta-drama is bigger than the in-App drama.The danger of pervasive software is clear: powerful entities — be they governments or for-profit corporations — should not control the online narrative and remain unregulated in their use of personal data generated by these systems. However, the approach taken by Congress and upheld by SCOTUS remains fundamentally flawed. When there is power imbalance between a software systems' users and its owners, the answer is never “pick a different owner”.

  SFC Files Amicus Brief in Support of Users' Rights under AGPLv3§7
  
  SFC filed an amicus brief in the ongoing case of Neo4j, Inc. v. PureThink, LLC, which is now appealed to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. The appeal focuses on a downstream licensee's right under the Affero General Public License, version 3 (and similar rights under GPLv3 and LGPLv3) to remove “Further Restrictions” — even when such restrictions are put in place by original licensors. SFC was proud to stand up for this important right under copyleft, and appears to be the only organization that filed an amicus brief in this case.
