I had a shit day yesterday for Reasons and one of the things that cheered me up was telling a man on a dating-adjacent platform that he had a lovely smile and a great profile (he asked a QUESTION in it! and it was a good question too) - I know men on said platform get very little attention and thought he'd appreciate it. And apparently he's been having a shit time healthwise, and it did indeed make his day.

As we all plummet into the End Times, I think it's going to be increasingly important to do nice small things for each other.

@downey Translators could have warned developers that this would happen, but everyone's so busy going "LLMs are fantastic for translation, translators aren't needed any more" and refusing to listen when we point out how they fundamentally don't work on a really important level!

@inthehands @datarama No, but if it's a good translation there *should* be other parts in English that are better than the original French. As a translator you can't always capture a particular phrase beautifully, but you can average the beauty over the whole text.

The same applies to humour. Some jokes don't translate but you'll spot an opportunity to get one in elsewhere that wouldn't work in the source language.

Needless to say, machines don't bother doing this.

So let me get this straight. Companies having replaced their human customer support staff with an AI chatbot (an insult to both their customers and employees in so many ways) can be forced to pay massively over the odds for said AI by people asking it to do things like "reverse a linked list in Python"?

I wonder what other examples could be used to do such a thing? Just so I can avoid doing it, obviously.

@morph I can just see 30 kph limits happening on all the major roads through densely populated areas. We desperately need to reorganise everything so we aren't at the mercy of billionaires pushing consumption and cars as essential.

Long shot, but is anyone out there working on cancer treatment trials in the UK? My sister's on her last chemo and there don't seem to be any available trials any more.

I live in a small town in Sweden. This morning I went out to my car (realising that I'd once again forgotten to lock the front door last night), drove along empty, wide roads to the nearest largeish town and parked in the brand new multistorey carpark by the railway station, where the first two hours' parking is free and the remainder of the time is very cheap.

I got out of the car without checking my surroundings, and as I leaned back in to get my bag out, I thought "In large parts of the world, I'd be asking to get mugged, or worse".

Then I walked along the clean, well-kept streets to the hospital, where I waited for less than 2 minutes for my mammography, which was completely free of charge.

This is Sweden. This is Europe. Why the FUCK are we trying to emulate, listening to, investing in or in any way having anything whatsoever to do with the utter insanity coming out of the USA?

And I don't just mean under the current, obviously barking, incumbent. I mean ever? They don't do things like we do. They don't believe in the same things that we do. This really is an us and a them situation, and we've been kidding ourselves for the last 80 years that they're like us.

I mean, I know I live in Sweden but I'd never before seen mouse ski tracks. That's the only thing I can think would have made these markings.

This is a really really long shot, but is there anyone out there who works at Talkmobile in the UK and can sort out a fuckup with my sister's mobile phone subscriptions subsequent to her husband's sudden death? She has cancer, she has kids, and as you can imagine, she really doesn't want to be spending hours and hours on the phone/chat trying to get the company to JUST DO ITS JOB.

My sister spotted this today in London. I feel sure that Bagpuss would indeed hate fascists (and as for the Clangers - obvious communists - they'd be all for shoving fascists into the blue string pudding well).

I translate from Swedish, French, Norwegian and Danish into English (mainly UK but US possible depending on the text - I also work with a USian translator as a team where required). I'm a full Member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting for both Swedish and French.

I'm also an Intermediate Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading – in other words, I offer proofreading/editing/copyediting services too.

Oh, and copywriting!

I work on everything from press releases through sustainability reports to novels. Particularly fond of archaeology/history (got to get use from my MA somehow) and personal development, but really I'm interested in almost everything and translation allows me to be a nerd about all kinds of things.

I'm really loving how Mastodon has become a refuge for all the grizzled seafarers on the ocean of the internet. They pop up in my feed and their bios all say something like
