@evan Wow, there are people who reply no to this! Fascinating... I'll chalk that up to people conflating "social network" with "social media" I guess...

Ok, I mean, sure, the WORST thing is the fascists ripping the last of our freedoms from us, but once that happens, the worst thing about THAT will be hearing people ask, "How did this happen!?" and then having them ignore or debate with us when we tell them the answer... again.

The worst thing about progressives ignoring problems with Big Tech, not even trying alternatives, is that eventually, when the fascists have ripped the last of our freedoms from us and we're left with no rights at all, those scabs still won't see that they could have made a difference.

@ophiocephalic Yeah, and it really would be the smallest show of solidarity to just make accounts in the fedi to add to the existing big tech presences.
To me, saying that's too big of an ask for this org makes me think it's really more about making the impression that the org is "normal" and doesn't care about "all that complicated tech mumbo jumbo"

Oof. Mehran is one of the people in the "inner circle" of DiEM25 (the "ex officios" and coordinating collective). He hosts the DiEM podcast among other things.
This is the closest I've come to getting someone in the inner circle to listen to me on the tech issue... aaaand this is also why I will probably never be successful as an organizer. Damn.
Can someone teach me tolerance? I mean I doubt it, but... please?

Looking for folks in the US who need, want, have formed, or are in solidarity economy networks. ICE agents are assaulting people where I live now. Please text me in Signal if you live in or near the WV Eastern Panhandle or Northern Virginia and want to connect and/or get connected with the local networks I know.

@amszmidt @neptune22222 @markwyner You missed the argument, but you are demonstrating very well the emotional reaction that some on the US side of the community have had to the European side's strategies. I used to have the same reaction until I read more and thought about it in as many ways as I could. If you are dead set on distrusting the entire European side of the FSF, I doubt I can convince you there is more to this than that. But please stop making arguments that ignore mine completely.

@neptune22222 @amszmidt @markwyner It might not end up going this way, but if I have my way, the FSF and the FSFE will see the good and common intentions behind their diverging strategies, and coordinate instead of continuing as more independent entities.
However regardless of whether all FSF directors and members see my point, I think the FSFE's use of "open source" IS intended to leverage the marketing term to push for stricter regulations that non-FOSS can't legally use the term. It'd help.

@amszmidt @neptune22222 @markwyner The argument I make is that although some tech companies might have been using "open source" disingenuously to market to people who associate the term with progressive software development, the FSFE's adoption of the term MIGHT have been an attempt to leverage that as a means of REGULATING those companies and making them ABIDE BY the FSF's definition of FOSS licenses, by insisting that to be marketed as "open source" the software must be FOSS.
