Implementing new features also takes a lot of work and most open source maintainers do it for free.

It's really not a big deal to ask for an issue. It's a matter of respecting the project and its contributors.

If creating an issue is "too much work", the requested feature might not be worth to be implemented.

I thought most of the servers of the current spam wave run outdated software, so updates will not hit these servers any time soon or at all

Unfortunately status.created only triggers on local posts, which is good if you want to process your instance's posts, but you cannot filter incoming posts for spam.
