Every day I ask myself the same question: Is Mastodon better because of its institutional structure? Or does it just seem better because of who’s self-selected to be here? And the more unsettling version of the second question: Am I just congratulating myself on being in a bubble?

(An answer that I can’t completely dismiss: It’s also terrible here, only in ways that I’m not seeing.)

“Twitter is where the public conversation is happening.” (Policy bans all links to other social media platforms.)

At this rate Twitter is just going to be an app for acquiring Elon Musk’s opinions and doing his bidding.

@admin Hmmm. “sharing your articles, live-posting breaking news, etc.” from journalists more used to Twitter. “That doesn’t fly here.”
    It doesn’t?

Mastodon feels a lot like the 90s Internet, and not just for lack of the cute/clever/less texty features added later. It’s also still significantly influenced by the ethos of people who care intensely about the whole thing as an experience—and as a meaningful project that they’re helping to build.

I’d say subjectively the 90s Internet died on 9/11, which coincided with an influx of people who took it all for granted and just showed up to fight. It can’t take that long to happen here, can it?
