Peer reviewed science has strong evidence that autism is caused by atypical variations in neural pruning and mirror neurons that begin during early development, caused by the presence of genetic mutations on the X chromosome and other genes.

Because of the relationship between autism and genetic variation, autism often presents alongside other disorders, such as ADHD, depression, dysphoria, learning disabilities, and the pathological use of too many commas. These presentations underscore much of the language around autism as a spectrum, although these "co-morbidities" do not articulate the spectrum as a whole.

Autism is a hereditary neurological condition, and many individuals with autism were raised by parents who also have autism and were not raised with an awareness of how autism affects one's perception of events, creating a trauma loop that further complicates development.
