I’m not big on New Year’s resolutions, but I made a few this year. The pile of books on my bedside table has gotten out of hand. I hear by resolve to read all of these books by the end of the year. And at least start to work on the box of books under the bed. #bookstodon
I have read a lot of @violetblue technology, and sexuality reporting over the years. Just finished reading #AFishHasNoWordForWater. I highly recommend this for anyone who lives in #sanfrancisco, has visited San Francisco, works in the technology industry, knows of someone who has or has been homeless themselves. A powerful story that must have been unimaginably difficult to write. I look forward to the next installment (which I hope will become a thing.) #bookstodon
Finished “Call Us What We Carry” which wasn’t in the original pile, but I felt it was important to read timely, so it jumped the pile. Powerful stuff. A once in a generation voice. #bookstodon
I finished Fidelity and Modem World. Fidelity was great, pure art. Modem World was good for what it covered but it completely missed large swaths of the scene. Which, ok, can’t cover everything, but it missed a lot. #bookstodon
Local community college has an opening for a part time cyber security professor. I thought that would be fun, I have some time, I have teaching experience, I meet all the other qualifications, so I send in a resume and CL via their automated web form. AND get auto rejected by the HR bot because I didn’t tic the Masters degree box.
This is the >110 year old 16v transformer that powered the doorbell in my house. It works fine. Pushes out a consistent 16.3v. Had to replace it with a new 24v transformer for my video doorbell. It lasted 14 months and took out the camera with it when it blew.
To be fair @defcon has changed A LOT over 30 years. Expecting it to be the same forever is an exercise in futility. That’s OK. DC should morph, grow, change and be expected, even encouraged to change. But there is an image, an expectation, perpetuated by the media, and ourselves, of a techno-counter culture that IMO is no longer present at DEFCON. Thats OK! If you drink up the media and expect that version, if you go wanting the mythology of the past, you will be very disappointed.
