Good afternoon from the summit of Hawkeye Point in the Goat Rocks Wilderness. Incredible view of Mount Rainier from up here. I hope you are all doing well! This weekend in Goat Rocks has been a real blessing.

@killyourfm Oh yeah, I couldn’t do it. You did a good job with the storytelling.

@killyourfm Good way to do it! This thumbnail is good. Best to focus on the actual content. If it’s enjoyable, which I think it is, people will watch. I miss your podcasts. I listened to all the “recent” episodes of the hiking and linux ones.

And here’s @intrepidhero hiking on the other side of the volcano this morning. The Loowit Trail is much more rugged and amazing than I expected. Epic weekend so far.

@killyourfm @reb I second this brand. I have one with microUSB and it’s fine. Used it three weeks ago when I accidentally let the battery drain while I was playing mechanic for the day. Worked great.

Enjoying my morning at Smith Rock State Park. Currently having breakfast at the top of Eagle’s Nest. First time here and it’s an awesome park so far. Planning to hike all the major trails today on a large loop.

@killyourfm I’m definitely keeping Garmin for the foreseeable future. Plus I have the ~$30/y search and rescue insurance tied to it. That said, when it does work on my iPhone it is much more convenient and I use it heavily half of the year.

@killyourfm I’ve been in situations multiple times where neither text nor satellite worked at all. 🙁 Definitely not reliable.

@trode Luckily most all of the configurations are out of stock! The MacBook I use most often is an M1 Air with 8GB of RAM so not worried about that. Also running linux on that one. And I mostly just watch YouTube on it. It didn’t seem like a compromise at all. I truly believe that it can do almost anything any Mac can do, just a bit slower. I have an M4 Pro with 16 GB as well :)

Went to the Apple Store to check out the MacBook Neo and I have thoughts. While Citrus is the most fun color and Blush is going to sell like crazy, Indigo is the color for me. It had purple tones, which is a plus. Overheard a teenager pitching her mom on one for school. The girl mentioned the education discount and mom was receptive. The sound is decent, trackpad and keyboard are excellent, screen crisp, feels fresh. I already have three MacBooks and shouldn’t buy one but almost certainly will.

I had a nightmarish number of ticks on me yesterday. The day was going amazingly. I hiked a section of the Metolius-Windigo Trail in the morning, explored some rough forest roads in the CRV for a few hours, then decided to take an afternoon hike up the northern-most MWT section. I was up near the Bear Valley Trailhead when I needed to tie my boot lace. Looked down and there were ticks all over my pants. I saw more ticks in the span of an hour than I’ve seen in the last three years combined.

@GPJohnston A couple tried but they were already starting to die from the permethrin so they didn’t get far. I’m still feeling things crawling on me as I’m standing now. I’ll be back out but at least I can mentally prepare.

@GPJohnston I’m thinking more and more about the coast, that’s for sure. There are some Oregon sections I would like to visit too.
