Ovin Loven is doing a pop-up tonight, tomorrow, and a few days next week in Benders Bar. We love her matzo ball soup and cheeseburger galettes. She posts her schedule on IG https://www.instagram.com/ovinloven/
Question for my fedi friends: what happens here if a government makes these demands on the fediverse? I'm guessing it would be up to each server admin if they chose to follow those government requests, right? Have we seen anything like this happen on Mastodon servers yet?
I spotted this copper-plated microcar in West Oakland yesterday. This BMW Isetta is owned by the Truffle Man. He calls it the "Fudge Buggy" and occasionally uses it as a point of sale for his chocolate business. #BMW#Isetta
Stunning photos of a person dressed like a whirling dervish being peppersprayed by police at a protest in Istanbul. The first photo is by Chris McGrath, who has more photos and important details about these protests in this IG post https://www.instagram.com/p/DHlZZjhtq8L/?img_index=1
I took a train to Sacramento today. The second we got off the train, I started playing with my #yoyo and this stranger walks buy and asks “have you heard of Doctor Popular?”. I said “that’s me” and we chatted for a minute. It turns out I was talking to #AndySinger, a cartoonist from Minneapolis that was a major influence on me and my art. It’s funny we bumped into each other in a town neither of us live in. I’ll write more about him, and the impact he had on my life, soon.
Between this and the recent censorship of political hashtags like #Democrat and #Kamala, I think Zuck is making a strong case for the decentralized alternatives like Mastodon and Pixelfed.
My post was on the front page of Hacker News this morning before getting flagged for some reason. Comments are good there though, I appreciate that and it’s nice seeing it spread around after all the work that went into it. https://social.lansky.name/@hn50/113871343203606005
"Biden", "Democrat", "VoteBlue", "MichelleObama", "JohnOliver" (?!), and 25 more hashtags that Instagram censored on Trump's inauguration day. Spoiler alert: "Republican" wasn't one of them. https://docpop.org/2025/01/the-day-instagram-blocked-democracy/
Nightshade, the AI data poisoning tool, is now available. Artists and photographers can use this defensive tool to prevent their work from being used without permission for AI training models. It's free and easy to use, and it works well on my original art (see attached).
Even if you are personally fine with AI companies using your work without permission, we should all be using whatever tools we have until these companies switch to using ethically sourced models.
