The Bamboo Cutter is a Japanese #folktale about Princess Kaguya, a miniature girl found by an old bamboo cutter inside the stalk of a glowing bamboo plant. It was later discovered that she came to Earth from the Moon to escape a celestial war, and was later apparently returned to her extraterrestrial family on the moon in a round flying machine similar to a flying saucer. The tale was first recorded in 1592. #JapaneseFolklore@folklore#japadon#folklore#ukiyoe ?1. Hiroshige 2. Studio Ghibli
In Chinese mythology, the Kunlun Mountains are a divine mountain range believed to connect the lands of the gods with both the living and the underworld. They are home to the goddess Xiwangmu and her garden where the peaches of immortality grow. #mythology#folklore#ChineseMythology#DailyFolklore ?Zhang Daqian, 1940s.
In #JapaneseFolklore tofu kozo is a #yokai appearing as a young boy wandering around the streets offering tofu on a plate. Because he is basically harmless the other yokai bully him for his weakness and he gets no respect at all. He tends to act as a servant for the other more powerful yokai. In rare cases he will follow someone home on a rainy night, but in order to avoid any confrontation he will quickly disappear once his 'victim' reaches their home. #DailyFolklore#folklore ? In Japanese folklore Tenjin is a Shinto deity of learning, scholarship and academia. Originally a famous poet and scholar, he was deified after his death and became a god of natural disasters. Over time his role changed and he became the patron of students and academics. He is also associated with plum trees and bulls. I've written about him here: http://www.curiousordinary.com/2022/01/tenjin.html #DailyFolklore#folklore#japodon#JapaneseFolklore#Japan
In #JapaneseFolklore some kitsune (foxes) are yokai believed to be able to shapeshift and take the form of beautiful women. These fox women have been known to seduce and play tricks on unsuspecting men. In some cases the men will marry the 'woman' never realising she is actually a fox in disguise. #folklore#Japan#japodon#ukiyoe#yokai#DailyFolklore#JapaneseArt ?'White Fox - Temptation' by Okamoto Ryusei, 2006.
