@dave @zkat I don’t know how it is where you are, but here in Québec to be employed as an “engineer” you need to be a member of the Order of Engineers. “Engineer” is regulated, “developer” and “programmer” are not.
But… Software engineers and software developers sit side-by-side in the office and do the same work to the same standards for the same compensation. I’m not sure there’s any difference in practice.
When my employer was informed that it was illegally hiring software engineers, I had to sign a new contract with a different title, everything else stayed exactly the same.

@evan mtl.rocks doesn’t have enough active posters for our timeline to be interesting. Would love to “bubble” with a couple of other geographically-local instances, if the software supported that!

@evan didn’t the new CEO fire everyone who didn’t agree to do everything he said without question?

@gwynnion agree completely, blazingly well said.
I’ve said for years that if we look the other way on harm and exploitation, based on the short-term thinking that it “could never be us”, we also undermine our own position.
I like to use the example of slaughterhouses – there’s no law of nature that prevents them from working on humans. The infrastructure that we’ve built for the mass farming and slaughter of other animals will be appropriated for the next holocaust.
But any time I suggest that these systems are dangerous to human rights, people immediately dismiss it without consideration based on a feeling that at least they are safe.

Today it’s my favourite day of the year! #MontrealProtocol day.
There was a big scare throughout the 80s and 90s around the emissions of CFCs punching a hole into the ozone layer above Antarctica. It was even referenced in that Smash Mouth song.
Consensus around the harm of CFCs formed quickly in the scientific community. Politicians were urged to act.
And those politicians listened. Hundreds of them from around the world met up here in #Montreal to sign the document that would globally ban CFC use.
It worked. The hole in the ozone layer is still monitored, and it’s shrinking every year.
We did it, hoomans!
In the face of climate doomerism, the Montréal Protocol stands tall and strong, proving that consensus and co-operation can overcome corporate interests; that we’re not doomed to extinction at the hands of late-stage capitalism; that we still do have some control over our shared future.
We won’t change things if we believe we can’t.
Happy Montréal Protocol day, everyone.
