I recently asked #trans friends on here about an online appointment form for physical therapy that had a required question about sex at birth. Was there any legit reason a PT practice had to know that? Nope. So I asked the PT company (it has a few locations in the #SFBA) why they had this, especially since their non-discrimination policy specifically mentioned gender identity and gender expression.

My question got them looking closer at the standard form their web vendor plugged in from the insurance company, and it’s been redone. They consulted with me several times over wording, etc., which I passed along to some queer friends for their feedback.

I learned a lot from this little act of allyship. Mainly, just ask, and you have no idea what that little thing may lead to. Also, I learned more deeply about the daily crap our trans brothers and sisters have to face every day. And, as usual, it all came down to medical insurance. Ugh.

Here’s some #bikeArt that #BikeTooter folks might like from the Ruth Asawa retrospective at SF MOMA. These are a couple of her prints from the early 1950s. The top one was made from a bike pedal. For you kids, bike pedals used to be just a square tube of rubber around a metal spindle, not the nice platforms we have now.

The other print was made with a potato. I’d say Ruth was pretty good at using things that were at hand. She did a whole series of prints using the laundry stamp that she used when she worked in the laundry at Black Mountain College.

@skinnylatte A clarification on the purple urchins: we want to remove them from areas where they are decimating the kelp beds because the starfish (one of their predators) are diminished, but in other areas they are fine. One example is Pillar Point tidepools in Half Moon Bay. There’s no kelp right there. Yet people think they need to pick off the nasty purple urchins. Yes, the urchins can be harvested (with a state fishing license) but they don’t need to be eradicated.

@skinnylatte I’m in love myself. I’m surprised I got a Tern. Was really sold on a Gazelle. But then I thought about being able to put my feet down at stops and kept looking. Got it at Avenue Cyclery, where I once bought a bike about 40 years ago.

New bike day! Tern NBD, which I guess means No Big Deal (it is though), but it also means New Bike Day. Ta-daaa!
I was debating names: Ternip, My Tern, Seagull, Albatross, etc. But I think I’ll go with Sooty Shearwater, since she’s a nice sooty color.

A ride today from Natural Bridges State Beach in Santa Cruz to Capitola. Sunny, nice by the water but hot anywhere else, just a beautiful day for a ride.

The lineup at Pleasure Point, some cormorants perched in a tree, and a bored bull in Arana Gulch Open Space Park (nice bike path through there), and the Capitola Beach.

Sheesh, let’s talk about #tides and sand transport on beaches. Here are two photos taken 22 hours apart, yesterday and today, from the same spot, where Frenchman’s Creek and Pilarcitos Creek meet up to bust through to #HalfMoonBay.

@haayman This was just normal tidal action. That the creeks are running out through the dunes is due to our winter weather, which is when we get rain.
