I’m trying to learn to paint more precisely. For the detail on the house, I used a 1/4” Princeton dagger. I created the highlights on the roof by rubbing the paper lightly with a white birthday candle. I used dots of paint to create the texture in the foreground grass. #watercolor #watercolour #art #MastoArt

This is about the 10th time I have painted the Santa Catalina Mountains (Tucson). My greens are sap + quin gold , the browns are raw sienna + burnt sienna, the darks are ultramarine + burnt sienna, and the highlights are titanium white. I painted the foliage with a fan brush— stippling, sliding, sometimes using the flat of the brush, sometimes the corner, and sometimes the “knife” edge. See ALT. #watercolor #watercolour #art #MastoArt #landscapepainting #painting

WIP. I usually paint from imagination, using some kind of geometric pattern. That pattern is clear in this half finished painting. I wet my paper *gently* under a cold faucet, put the paper on Gatorboard, and paint with a small hake and rigger. When the paper begins to dry, I staple down the edges. #watercolor #watercolour #art #MastoArt

Sometimes my painting gets a little dark. I’ve found that using cobalt blue as my primary blue and leaving a lot of white space in the sky lightens things up a bit. Colors: cobalt blue, a little ultramarine, alizarin, raw sienna, burnt sienna, green gold. Brushes: small hake, 6, 2, 1/4” Princeton dagger. #watercolor #watercolour #art #MastoArt

A desert sunrise. I tried to imitate the desert green by using spring green + alizarin and using green gold + raw sienna. My usual way is to use ultramarine + quin gold, but that gets a little dark. Brushes: hake, 2, finger painting. #watercolor #watercolour #art #MastoArt

Today’s painting is of the Pusch Ridge in the Santa Catalina Mountains, Tucson, Arizona. In the spring, there is an amazing amount of growth in the Sonoran desert. This time I used ultramarine + quin gold to make the desert greens. See ALT. #watercolor #watercolour #art #MastoArt #landscapepainting #painting

I like painting with a limited palette: 3 blues (ultramarine, cobalt, cobalt teal), 2 reds (alizarin, and sometimes vermillion), 2 yellows (Hansa, quin gold), 2 earths ( raw sienna, burnt sienna), and green gold. Anyway, here’s my latest. Enjoy! #watercolor #watercolour #art #MastoArt

More loose experimentation. Process: A variegated wash in a C or S pattern. Dry. Then add details. Colors: Ultramarine, Alizarin, Raw Sienna, Rich Green Gold, Burnt Sienna, Paynes Grey. Brushes: small hake, rigger. Enjoy! #watercolor #watercolour #art #MastoArt

Just plain fun. Inspired by a tutorial by katiewhiteartist on Instagram, but she does it better. Colors: Cobalt Blue, Spring Green, Sap Green, Paynes Grey. Brushes: quill, rigger. #watercolor #watercolour #art #MastoArt
