@nyanide @munir wifi doesn't go "up" unless the radials are horizontal.

vertical antennas (which are usually quarter wave verticals) are dipoles with one leg going up, and instead of the other leg going down, the bottom leg is smooshed flat into a ground plane. Vertical antennas cut to the band they operate on radiate horizontally, in a shape like an infinity sign with the waist part on the antenna. they have *very* deep nulls straight up, straight down, and about 30 degrees from there.

@PNS in the middle, there, they did two polls. 90% said immigration was a good thing. then 5 years later, 60% said it was too high.

Like, when you're 6, having cake 3 meals a day sounds like a good idea, but 5 years later, you're puking your guts out trying to make that happen.

@icedquinn yeah i don't know why i said that, it wasn't what i meant. protobuf is probably closer, but more investigation shows that it's not a serialization format, it's closer to a sqlite3 .db file, but made to support "large arrays" and is single writer, although technically sqlite is single writer too, so there's that.

anyhow it looks like python has a fully-realized API to .h5 files; but i assume you wanted to read and write without the library?

@icedquinn right, but i asked for a sample file using example data that made sense. It drew a couple of diagrams and some scaffold code to read/write it, but did not mention "you asked for a sample file in the HDF5 format and since it's binary, i'm going to do this instead"

so i went on github to find examples, and i went, this looks oddly like capnproto or some wire proto and figured it out from there.

it's just one of the myriad ways that LLMs mess with me ;)

@icedquinn not wire, like a record file format, or a "data structure that can be saved to disk as is" and the name eludes me

@icedquinn it really bugs me that copilot knows where i live when i ask it to like "generate a sample HDF5 file"

it knows where i live, but it doesn't have the ability to tell me outright it's a binary format and my request makes no sense as typed.

    what a jerk

@icedquinn is it because of format quirks or

it seems like one of those things that should be solved. Like a solid specification that must be followed, or something. I've never messed with it (as mentioned), but in the general case, the two hardest problems in CS are Cache Invalidation, Naming Things, and off-by-one errors.

do you have like a blog or something where you keep track of what works and when?

At some point i need to keep better notes. Maybe something like tiddlywiki.

@icedquinn i used to care; i think it shouldn't be criminal to have plant material or derivatives. And i suppose the argument should be made that the state already extracts lots of vice tax, so why not on this stuff.

However, i don't think it should be celebrated and sold at the corner store.

i dunno, maybe i'm just getting old, and annoyed that i had to have a plug or connect whenever i wanted to partake.

and my stupid ass state banned a tree leaf so /shrug

it isn't even the valid statistc, it's actually a 3% increase, not a 31% decrease. Lying with stats!

Attached: 1 image LOL! they're saying murders are down 31% because they're counting 2024 TOTAL murders (more than 1 per day!) to the numbers *through august* in 2025. if you divide 370/256 you get .69, which means 256 is 31% lower than 370. so it's a lie via statistics! so the actual murder rate is *actually* 3% more this year than last year, if you extrapolate 32 murders a month.

Chicago sees 33% drop in homicides through first half of 2025, data shows
      from @fox32news
County data show that Chicago could be on track to record fewer than 500 homicides this year, which would be the lowest total in years.

The "homicides are down 30% this year" report made a huge error. They shouldn't have said that.

"this year" means "since trump became president" - not "30% year over year for the past 5 years"

it means that anyone who wants to can correlate the 30% drop in homicides to *trump becoming president again*.
