Today, I spent the equivalent of around ten hours of work (on my day off, no less), designing and developing a new kind of “side service” I wanted to offer to people who: Don’t have the time, or don’t want to learn HTML and CSS, and who want to separate themselves from corporate media, just a little bit, even if it’s just to stop paying services like Linktree a monthly fee.

today I learned they force people to wear ankle bracelets when on house arrest but that's not the part I learned

the part I learned was that they charge you 400 dollars a month to wear it

Here's an interesting question: If NFTs weren't using up energy needlessly, weren't a concept filled to the brim with gamblers, scammers, and otherwise grifter types, and were _just_ a way to casually collect limited edition art, digitally

Would you find them interesting?

I ask, because I saw someone else say it, but I do still think that's kind of cool? I mean we live in a digital age and people buy digital things all the time. The concept of a limited edition avatar, or piece of art, that you can be like "I supported this and it's special" is in its base, neat.

But it's also blockchain, and rife with pump and dump crap, people trying to make millions and launder money.

@evan I will admit that I don't really know how service providers, or what-have-you can do fiscally well in the fediverse, aside from advertising. What I do know, is, I don't want Mastodon, or the greater fediverse, to just turn into another version of regular social media that feeds you ads. I don't know the alternative answer to generating revenue, aside from crowdfunding. But I feel like if the internet is rebuilding through federated connection, then we should think of a way to build new, less intrusive streams of money

@evan Well hello, it's good to meet you! I know my writing on all this probably seems a little negative, and I won't say that I know _all_ of the history behind this stuff. I'm just confused why Meta is part of the team. I know they're working on federating, but boy oh boy do they have some antagonistic policies

@Polychrome i think it's using the patch that breaks it, which sucks, cause I spent 40 bucks on an avatar and all i've got is the ability to not upload it lol

@Polychrome it says unity needs the VRC runtime plugins so you can open the avatars and then upload them to your account, but i've been unable to figure out how to make that work on linux because it's all heavily based on windows

then i found through a search that you can install a patch to make it work on linux but it breaks their ToS to do so

okay, so there's no way to get the VRChat SDK working on linux unless you break their ToS, so maybe I'll just do a virtual install of windows so i can do this
