Asked my mom to watch The Apartment with me tonight as I think through showing it in my spring film class, and she said she hadn't seen it since she was 13. After it ended, she tried to convince me that no one is old enough to watch The Apartment.
@YoWatShiinaEsq There is free kayaking on the Hudson on summer weekends leaving from Inwood! I always wanted to do it but then we moved up to the Bronx and I keep forgetting about it in favor of the lake boating program we keep forgetting about... http://www.inwoodcanoenyc.org/
@YoWatShiinaEsq Oh how cool! What a great way to get to know the city! I used to act, but I wasn't very good at it. I loved singing in front of people though--have fronted three bands. Before the pandemic we went to a lot of off-Broadway stuff but Death of a Salesman was our first play back in theater. Our last before lockdown was María Irene Fornés's Drowning, as a mini-opera by Philip Glass--the "masks" in that are disturbing! https://www.maboumines.org/production/mud-drowning/
@YoWatShiinaEsq Same! My favorite part of learning languages is when you find out there's some much more complicated reason than you imagined for why a phrase means what it does. If you get a chance, Death of a Salesman is on Broadway right now with Wendell Pierce in the lead! I don't love that play, but this is the best imaginable production of it.
@YoWatShiinaEsq It's derived from traveling salesmen, right? I don't know for sure but it sounds like it. Will see if I can find out... Edit: yes! Traveling salesmen would be limited to an area that presented unique challenges, so a good salesman had to figure out how to work with the limitations rather than complain about them.
@YoWatShiinaEsq@Curakagi@Yukari This has been my take on it. Two other people have my actual name, Carrie Shanafelt. If someone creates a false account on Twitter in my identity, I've publicly announced everywhere that I've deactivated, so no one who actually knows me will believe it's real, especially since what's left of Twitter has been abandoned to trolls. What scares me more is Musk data-mining and selling my passwords, DMs, follower lists, etc.
The "master class" scene in Tár reminded me of the time my undergrad Intro to Playwriting class got a visit from Edward Albee. Edward Albee! In my little class! We were invited to think of what advice we wanted from him.
No one dared, so I said I'd been writing short stories and poetry as long as I could write, but I was finding plays a challenge. What did he think was the difference in craft?
He said, "You probably aren't smart enough. It's difficult." Shrug.
And only later did I realize that my prof had set me up because he wanted me to try to impress him, put me off-balance. But instead I just concluded that playwrights are assholes. (I met nice ones later.)
Last night I dreamed that one of my dear childhood friends decided to get body modification surgery so that she would have very long, extremely powerful arms and could live in the trees. I went to the hospital with her and helped her convalesce. But then she disappeared, up into the branches.
@YoWatShiinaEsq I'm sure lots of trolls will see this as an opportunity to squeeze into spaces where they have been unwelcome elsewhere. I'm trying to figure out how to retain openness and eagerness to meet new people with wariness about letting racists and misogynists (in this case) into my instance!
Just blocked someone from my server who immediately took to Twitter to denounce me who claims to have five different accounts here and is trying to become some kind of super-troll. I apologize to anyone who ran into him; I had a weird feeling about his reason for joining my server, and should have trusted my gut.
