@evan i feel there's an asymmetry here that makes this a... poorly thought out response.

that said, in spaces where visibility is *expected*, it can be extremely valuable to know who's in the room with you. that's a different circumstance than the question of the poll, so deserves a separate answer.

@evan ah so the specific issue is that this is an example of *not* being in control of who sees your stuff

if you don't expect that clicking a link reveals your identity to another person, you might be *very surprised* to find that your stalker or a mass-harrassment group now knows who you are

@evan ah so are you saying that activitypub *already* reveals your identity to the server of anyone who's profile you view through your front-end server or client?

and therefore, it's no big deal for the server to inform the person that you viewed the profile?

I guess I lost my faith in Apple doing the right thing when Steve Jobs announced FaceTime promising it would be made into a cross-platform open standard and then just.... didn't

    That was in 2010.

    did anyone use desqview/x?

i remember lusting after advertisements i saw for it in my dad's programming magazines

desqview started as a dos tsr with desktop organizer widgets and slowly expanded into a fucking multitasking operating system

    with an x11 server

@evan i feel like the only thing that realistically prevents that is the combination of:

    1) companies and governments offering services through proprietary android and ios apps, without a standard web interface

    2) those companies distributing their android apps exclusively through the google play store, which is not open source

    3) google not making it easy to install google play services "legitimately" on a random aosp phone without doing something hinky to sideload it

@evan i think using "subject" (a term of art in computer posting) and "post" (also a term of art in computer posting) together confused me :D
