Make it make sense.

I think a lot about this scene in Dead Poets Society these days. The scene begins with Robin Williams getting fired for having taught "banned material" (i.e., poetry) to these kids. The fascist-coded dean of the private school shows up in class and ushers him unceremoniously out the door, and one by one, each child this teacher instilled with a love of literature stands on their desk, facing him, saying "Oh, Captain, My Captain", which is a reference to a poem by Walt Whitman about the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.

Here is the first stanza, for those interested:

O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done,
The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won,
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

Here's the point I want to make:

Standing changed nothing.
They stood anyway.

Standing arguably made their lives worse.
They stood anyway.

There was nothing, absolutely *nothing* the students could do to stop the actions of the dean or the teacher's dismissal from the school in disgrace.
They. stood. anyway.

When you stand up for trans people, it will change nothing. They will still come for us. When you stand up for black and brown people and immigrants, it will change nothing. They will still come for us. When you stand up for women, it will change nothing whatsoever. They are in full and complete power. They will still come for us. They will still drag us away. They will still punish you for your actions.

Stand anyway. Oh Captain, my captain.

Democratic Governors, if you're listening, here's how we do it:

1. Snatch a Proud Boy
2. In fact snatch five or six of them
3. Throw in a random MAGA podcaster for good measure
4. Label them all gang members.
5. Put them in solitary lockup
6. No press allowed
7. Start shipping them one by one overseas somewhere
8. Watch MAGA fall all over themselves learning what due process is for the first time in their pathetic little fascist lives
9. Watch the MAGA lawsuits immediately appear in the Supreme Court arguing for the very thing they just argued against

MAGA never learns until it harms them directly, so let's fucking harm them directly - and use their own rules to do it. Due Process doesn't exist for gang members? Okay, you're a gang member. Come with us.

It's not too late. He doesn't have control of everything yet. He's floundering and making mistakes. This is one of them. Let's light this candle.

Turns out all those people stockpiling guns in case the government tries to take away their rights are actually totally fine letting the government take away their 1st amendment right to free speech, their 5th amendment right to due process, their wife's 14th amendment right to bodily autonomy, their 22nd amendment right to presidential term limits, and their 24th amendment right to free elections, as long as they can be racist.

The sooner you start, the longer it takes. Learning to play an instrument is a lifetime journey. You will never stop learning. No matter how accomplished you are, no matter how much you know, no matter how much skill you acquire, there is always, ALWAYS a higher, steeper, more difficult peak to climb just ahead on the path. So the time to start is the moment that you decide to start.

Let me tell you another secret.

It's ok to do things badly. Let go of the falsehood that there is only value in doing something you enjoy, only if you're good at it. At first, you're going to be bad at this. It will not be beautiful. Do it anyway. If you persist, and you learn to enjoy doing it despite being bad at it, eventually you will stop being bad at it. And then, when you do it, it will be enjoyable AND beautiful.
