@sand I’m sure this recent news is unrelated, right?
TL;DR - Florida state law makes it ILLEGAL for cities to investigate their own police departments. Law went into effect Sep 1.

@rogerriddle @sand The city is prohibited from investigating by a recently-passed state law. https://www.wusf.org/courts-law/2024-08-31/two-decades-civilian-investigative-panel-police-oversight-miami-coming-to-end-florida-law
Hopefully, the national embarrassment will get the PD’s Internal Affairs to act. But I wouldn’t hold my breath.
@NaClKnight @sand I feel like this situation is a big deal, but falls into two massive Fedi blind spots at the same time. BTW, I can link to a video on Elon’s site, but I know people here hate that (I hate Elon too but not sure where else to get the video from). If anybody has another link for the vid, or wants me to post it anyway, let me know.
I know #sportsball isn’t a big deal in the Fediverse, but here is a glaring example of how bad racism is among police officers. #TyreekHill , an all-star #NFL football player, got violently taken out of his car, forced to the ground, and handcuffed for a traffic violation.
His teammate Calais Campbell (also black) came over to defend his teammate and ask what the cops were doing. So they handcuffed him too.
Tyreek was asked after the game about the mistreatment, and he said this: “‘What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill?’ Like worst-case scenario. It’s crazy.”
@WearsHats @thezenlady @StillIRise1963 @maya_b Exactly. The right-wing judges completely ignore the first half of the amendment. It says we need the militia for national defense. But America has a regular Army now (which it didn’t at the time of the 2A). We have the most powerful military in the world! This obviates the plainly stated reason for the right to bear arms. Therefore, the right is no longer applicable.
@StillIRise1963 This quote from a student was chilling:
“They prepare you for these things,” a 15-year-old girl told the New York Times. “But in the moment, I started crying. I got nervous.”
She thinks she did something wrong because she got scared by a mass murderer shooting up her school. 🤬🤬
No kids should have to PREPARE for this. The adults should be doing everything possible to prevent it. Instead, we get a-holes like Brian Kemp, who bragged about passing a law in GA allowing guns to be carried without licenses or background checks, pretending to be sad today. He doesn’t give a flying F about those kids. Or he NEVER would have signed such a law.
@Nonilex How nice of him to provide evidence of the campaign’s illegal activity. When he loses, his campaign officials can go to jail, and this time he won’t be there to pardon them because he’ll be in the next cell over.
@michelemccarthy Is that real or photoshopped?
@michelemccarthy I hope people remember what happened the last time a strongman in a western nation promised mass deportations... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resettlement_to_the_East
@kaia Oh Luxembourg, De Luxembourg, wie treu sind deine Blätter… 🎶
@dikleyt The police in Charlottesville arrested more college kids in tents in 2024 than the only FOUR people they arrested at the 2017 unite the white rally.
@kaia We can haz glory?
@kaia Conan O’Brien had an affair with Putin?
