It's really crazy just how much better #Linux is now than #windows.
A function of Linux getting a lot more user-friendly, and #microsoft...well not sure what they're trying to do, but loading their products with unwanted features and other crap.

Who would have guessed that the first head of government from the past decade who would be arrested for #humanrights #crimes wouldn't be #Putin, #Trump, #Netanyahu #MinAung #Myanmar or (one can dream) #Xi, but #Duterte #Philippines!
Hopefully (but unlikely), the start of a trend
#Japan and #Taiwan share so much culturally and socially, but would like to specifically see more sharing of this
Taiwan needs to embrace Japanese #toilets and rules against hotel rooms without windows.
Japan needs to embrace having cheap delicious #vegetarian food everywhere.
#Nagoya has 4(!) #Indonesian restaurants within walking distance from each other in the downtown area (and looks like several more within a few stations). Went to one and the owner (from Banyuwangi) asked if I was from #Malaysia 😅
I'll have to come to Nagoya more often for Indonesian food.
Very cool to see @thexylom publish an article in #telugu
Most global (and #Indian national) media neglect regional languages, or just publish in Hindi and ignore the 70% of India that doesn't read #Hindi or #English.
I keep hearing from #Mongols #Turks and now #Uyghurs living in #Japan that #Japanese is relatively easy for them to learn, as the grammar and structure is similar to their languages. That can't be a coincidence, seems like there is a likely common linguistic heritage, no?
Yet, linguists claim they are unrelated languages. Why the contradiction? Is it #Japanese nationalism? Or #western academic elitism?
So are people actually quitting #Meta #Facebook #Instagram this time, or are just complaining about it but still refusing to accept and personal responsibility to allowing #Zuckerberg to attain so much power?
I quit temporarily back in 2012, & permanently after the #Rohingya genocide was linked to hate speech spread via #FB. Cause, you know, lives matter more than your ability to "keep up with X"
@seanbala But will it? The massive flooding far inland due to a freak Hurricane #Helene in North Carolina didn't seem to have much of an impact, despite clear links to climate change. Nor the Texas grid crisis from a few years ago.
Grew up partly in Kansas myself so certainly understand the challenge in red America.
I wish climate-linked disasters in other countries mattered.
The #LAFires wouldn't be a "wake-up call" if we were paying attention when floods, typhoons, and fires hit countries like #Bangladesh, #India #Philippines and #brazil
It's hip to joke about how ignorant youth are about analog technology and things like payphone because they're "digital natives", but I often find it's older people who are far more dependent and addicted to their phone, big tech platforms like #google or #whatsapp and far more resistant to trying new tools.
A little late, but here's my #2024 highlights #journalism .
I covered #humanrights #climate and #environment across the world, but focused on #Asia.
This piece in @Vox took 6 months to produce, exploring a plan by #Japan to build an entire infrastructure to export captured #CO2 across Asia - an ambitious and likely infeasible plan.
For @thewirechina I wrote about how #China was able to make the self-immolation of singer Tsewang Norbu disappear, despite it taking place in front of #Tibet's most famous site, the #PotolaPalace
https://www.thewirechina.com/2024/09/15/remember-tibet-surveillance-china-censorship/
For @semafor I wrote about captive #coal factory-connected power plants, mostly financed by #China, which could doom regional #energytransition
and #decarbonization plans.
I was very happy to work with Atmos Magazine on this, posing a simple question - does opening the world largest #solar plant in a region, #Xinjiang #Uyghurs #china where genocide is taking place?
https://atmos.earth/the-worlds-largest-solar-plant-is-greenwashing-chinas-uyghur-genocide/
Great to see that the latest report from #Japan's Renewable Energy Institute specifically mentions both #Uyghur #forcedlabor & #coal intensity as concerns with #China's dominance of global #Solar
One of the first times a #climate/#energy group in Japan, as far as I know, has raised this. Not surprised its REI, the most independent & expert led such org.
https://www.renewable-ei.org/en/activities/reports/20241218.php
One culprit is holding back Asia from reaching its climate progress: captive #coal. In my story for @Semafor , I explore why coal plants connected to industrial plants, factories, smelters, but not the grid, could impacts the #energytransition
When China opened the world's largest solar plant this year, nearly all media reports & #climate reactions were positive
They all that #China’s solar prowess rests on the exploitation of #Uyghurs in their homeland
My latest for Atmos on the real cost of solar https://buff.ly/4gtT0pK
In car-congested cities like Seattle and Sacramento, #carsharing services are floundering. In my piece for Nextcity.org, I delve into how the latest shutdown of a promising free-flowing start-up, Gig sheds light on the challenges of #sharedmobility in the United States.
https://nextcity.org/urbanist-news/gig-car-sharing-startup-is-dead-why-is-car-share-so-difficult
On paper, the opening of the world’s largest #solar plant in China is a win for renewable energy and #climate action. But this plant, producing 3.5 GW of power, is in #Xinjiang, where many believe a genocide is taking place of the Uyghur people. My latest piece for Atmos
Asia-focused (🇯🇵🇲🇾🇮🇩 & #Tibet) global #journalist covering #environment, #energy #sustainability #HumanRights & supply chains. DM for Signal 🔑 Location: Usually #Japan, sometimes California or #Indonesia. searchable via tootfinder.ch
