@phaedral We're all driven by approval/connection, I think. It just isn't always obvious, because we're taught to separate and avoid.

One thing that's becoming obvious out of the current situation is how wrong the idea is that what motives us is personal gain. That might seem a bit weird, but bear with me.

One of the things that feels so hard about what's happened in my country is that I feel rejected. Not valued. Like all of the stuff I do and care about is worthless to most of my fellow citizens.

This is a painful feeling, but it helps to see it. It's not just my peeps that feel this.

What I understand him to be saying is that from their perspective “God exists.” This doesn’t prove God exists. He’s not saying it proves that God exists. What each of them mean by “God” is probably different anyway. But their basis for believing “God exists” is valid and the belief is functional for them.

And that is what differentiates “God” from “invisible unicorns,” for example.
