One thing that's becoming obvious out of the current situation is how wrong the idea is that what motives us is personal gain. That might seem a bit weird, but bear with me.
One of the things that feels so hard about what's happened in my country is that I feel rejected. Not valued. Like all of the stuff I do and care about is worthless to most of my fellow citizens.
This is a painful feeling, but it helps to see it. It's not just my peeps that feel this.

@abhayakara Personal gain isn't measured in dollars. It's measured in intangibles. von Neuman and Morgenstern were morons, money is not utility.

@abhayakara Too, the robber barons latched on to von Neuman and Morgenstern because their "money is utility" serves as such a nice gloss for the divine right of kings. It's only coincidental that "Theory of Games and Economic Behavior" supports the haves rather than the have-nots. (ahem)

@phaedral We're all driven by approval/connection, I think. It just isn't always obvious, because we're taught to separate and avoid.
