#3310 - Rejected Space Mission Profiles
In conversation about 7 days ago from mastodon.com.br permalink
Attachments
1. Four-panel comic titled "Rejected Space Mission Profiles." - Top left, "Jupiter Rover": a tiny rover-like vehicle falls through Jupiter's clouds, yelling "AAAAA!" - Top right, "Voyager 2 Orbiter": the Voyager spacecraft is pictured with a small satellite following a dotted elliptical orbit around the spacecraft. - Bottom left, "Crewed Pluto Flyby": a dotted trajectory swings past a small distant body and continues away; a tiny spacecraft says, "Uh, bye, I guess." - Bottom right, "Neptune Core Return": a small rocket-like spacecraft is emerging from the top of Neptune, whose round body is drawn like a bulging sack around a smaller body that is pulled out by the spacecraft. Hidden text: "Although NASA agreed that Voyager 2 'seemed lonely' they decided against launching a companion orbiter mission after further measurements indicated that the spacecraft actually preferred the peace and quiet."

#3301 - Stargazing 5
In conversation about a month ago from mastodon.com.br permalink
Attachments
1. A four-panel black-and-white comic about stargazing. In the first panel, a presenter stands with arms outstretched in front of several stick figures and says, "Welcome to stargazing! I'm back, despite efforts by astronomers who hate cool space facts to cover me up so I can't see the sky anymore! Nice try, losers! Next time buy a tarp that's harder to chew through!" In the second, the presenter holds binoculars while standing among the group and says, "Now, let's spy on some stars! Does everyone have binoculars? If you don't, find someone looking at birds and try to grab theirs. Stars are the birds of the sky." The third panel is a close-up of the presenter's head against a white background: "But stars aren't the only weird lights. Sometimes the sky fills with rippling colors. That's the sky's screensaver. It's very pretty, so don't move your mouse and ruin it." In the final panel, the presenter gestures upward while standing with the group: "That blob is a comet. People used to think they were harbingers of doom. We now know they're boring, so we have to find new reasons to use the word "harbinger." I'm a harbinger of astronomy! Cool facts are nigh!" Hidden text: "The sun and the moon appear the same size in the sky, even though in real life the sun is more than twice as big. Some call this lucky alignment coincidence; others say it's proof that sometimes things can be the same size."

1. Four-panel comic. First panel: A stick-figure presenter sits behind a desk beside a picture of a rocket and says, "The asteroid is headed for Earth, but a mission has been launched to intercept it." Second panel: On a rocky, airless surface, two stick figures stand near a lander; one carries equipment and a cable. Third panel: One figure stands while the other kneels beside an open laptop connected by a cable to the ground. Fourth panel: The kneeling figure types on the laptop as a black command-line box, originating from the laptop and styled as speech bubble, reads, "> noclip on". Hidden text: "Lander, this is Houston. There's been a request that you turn clipping back on and instead set the mass to 1kg. The theorists believe that will be pretty funny."

Attachments
1. Four-panel comic showing a teacher in front of class, using a pointer and a wall map. Panel 1: The teacher says, "Welcome to Geology 201. Today we'll be review-bombing an Applebees." Panel 2: The teacher points at a map on the wall and says, "Tomorrow we'll do Costco and Sephora." A student asks, "Why?" The teacher replies, "If we cut traffic to the Northgate shopping center, it will go to the East Plaza instead." Panel 3: Zoomed in on the teacher and the map. The map is showing layered rock formations, roads, and proposed routes. Teacher says, "This will push the state to cancel the North Bridge project and shift funds to the Highway 3 extension..." Panel 4: The teacher continues, "...creating new roadcuts through Triassic shale." One student interjects, "I like Applebees." The teacher replies, "Then you should have told the city to approve my dig permit." Hidden text: "The rise of AI review bombing tools threatens to take away a crucial source of experience for geology undergraduates."

In conversation about 2 months ago from mastodon.com.br permalink
Attachments
1. A single-panel stick-figure comic. A stick figure stands with one leg raised and holds a small hammer near it, saying, "Listen up, leg. I've been sending you rich, oxygenated blood for years, while you send me worthless used-up blood with no oxygen. Time to teach you a lesson about not ripping me off!" Caption below says "Tariffs". Hidden text: "You legs may have a comparative advantage at running, but we arms have a competitive advantage at swinging hammers, so unless you accept that we're the dominant limbs and stop hogging the oxygen, that running advantage won't be around for long."

#3281 - Antiques Roadshow
In conversation about 3 months ago from mastodon.com.br permalink
Attachments
1. A TV screen shows an episode of "Antiques Roadshow." A ponytailed appraiser gestures toward a small glowing star displayed on a pedestal while another stick figure stands beside it. The appraiser says, "Now, your grandmother said this was a relic low-mass population III star, from the first generation of stars. Unfortunately, the high iron content shows that it formed much later, after several rounds of supernovas. I'm afraid it's a population I star." The other person replies, "Aw, darn. Well, it still has sentimental value." A banner at the bottom reads "Antiques Roadshow." Hidden text: "The family lore was that we've had it ever since it was ejected from a star-forming gas cloud, but it seems more likely that my great-grandparents probably just bought it while on vacation in the galactic thin disk."

#3272 - Time Change
In conversation about 3 months ago from mastodon.com.br permalink
Attachments
1. Three-panel black-and-white comic: A stick figure speaks from a stage behind a podium to three audience members. "We all hate springing forward, but we love falling back. Therefore, we are abolishing the spring time change only. We’ll gain an hour every year, but never lose one." Someone asks, "Won’t that cause the clocks to spiral out of sync with the sun?" The speaker raises one arm and replies, "Then we will meet the chaos clear-eyed and well-rested!" Hidden text: "All discussions of daylight saving time policy are doomed by a mix of contradictory, inconsistent, and impossible preferences, which is why I think the only thing we can really hope to do is to make it worse."

In conversation about 4 months ago from mastodon.com.br permalink
Attachments
1. Single panel black-and-white comic. An image of a planet, presumably Saturn, showing prominent rings as well as three distant moons and one close, large moon. In front of the large moon is a line of spaceships dwindling into the distance toward the moon, or perhaps toward an orbit around it. Each spaceship has prominent rocket nozzles aimed toward the viewer and away from the large moon, as well as what appears to be a pile of material on "top" of the spaceship, with tie-down ropes holding it in place. Caption below the panel: "After learning that Tethys is exactly 1/12th the size of Earth, the miniature art model builders launched a fleet of ships to begin their final, greatest project." Hidden text: "In order to carry the necessary crafting supplies, they built the ships at 12:1 scale."
