@roadriverrail Holy cheeseballs, you came out as bi and your whole software development methodology changed?! I'm clearly doing something wrong here...

@roadriverrail As someone who's immunocompromised, who recently got over a ~two-month bout of viral pneumonia, and who was just told by my company that everybody* is expected to start coming into the office at least two days a week again as if the pandemic were just entirely done now... yeah, you're not gonna hear any argument from me.
*: I have several outs and will not be expected to do this. Most of my coworkers do not.

@roadriverrail Ugh, I'm sorry. It's such a terrible mess how people are treating covid like it's just over now and back to life as usual. <3 <3

@roadriverrail It is! But also it's that song. And it's Shirley still being amazing. And it's memories of the original and so it's also Siouxsie. And it's Pompeii and all that context. And it's that screaming guitar style that always just absolutely melts me. And it's all of that together--hot and burning in my nostrils, pouring down my gaping mouth--that leaves me absolutely content to melt, blanket of cinders, caught in the throes.
Either Shirley or Siouxsie can melt me down any day.

In unrelated news, TIL "Just a Gigolo" and "I Ain't Got Nobody" are not, in fact, a single song: It's a medley of two jazz standards from the early 20th century. Louis Prima recorded a medley of the two in 1956, and that version became officially famous. David Lee Roth covered that version in 1985, and many people--including me before today--had no idea they were ever separate.

In related news, however, playing Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" without the transition into "Where Did Our Love Go" feels really weird, and playing Green Day's "Brain Stew" without "Jaded" is a moral abomination.
I will absolutely die on this hill.

Me as I wake up: I wonder if I can get enough power from a tiny solar panel and battery to illuminate my house number with LEDs.
Still me: *stretches, yawns, grabs phone*
Also me: Oh hey, look! Fediversal pocket friends! I bet probably one of them is saying something interesting that I can research on the Internet and that has absolutely nothing to do with what I just grabbed my phone for!Me, finally getting up to start my day: I wonder if I can get enough power from a tiny solar battery...

@roadriverrail That's... super weird. I mean, sadly not terribly surprising, but weird. Like, I have personally known people named Kit of both of the Officially Approved legacy 20th century US genders. On my best days I am only completely clueless what it means to look like any name (on my worst days I am usually egregiously wrong), but that name?
I am so confused.

@roadriverrail And, like, I absolutely have sympathy for "To constrain complexity we solve a useful subset of what's technically allowed." But I hear what you're describing as perhaps a lot of vagueness and implied assumptions around the edges of "complexity" and "useful," and I've certainly found that pretty frustrating myself on more than one occasion.

@roadriverrail Yeah, I've definitely see my fair share of "Our standard library interface simplifies a common (for us) use case. If you want to do things that are technically allowed by the relevant protocols but don't fit our use case then go rummage in our code and start inheriting and overriding undocumented internals that may change next release (next week). Or stop doing standard stuff that's outside our implied common use case."

@roadriverrail As far as yacc and friends, in retrospect I'm really surprised how little those class of tools (basically none) I saw in the shops where I worked. I learned it basically on my own time, and by the time I did I wasn't in a position to advocate for a major rewrite.
To be fair, I think I heard once that available tools were weaker at handling anomalous or malicious inputs, which makes sense, but my drive is to build better tools, and it's so wild to me that we just... didn't.

@roadriverrail My general gist--which I suspect might be related to where you're going here--is that HLL innovation is great, but at some point you have to solidify. Unceasing growth is cancer, and too much convention or OS independence is a wart.

@roadriverrail Oh lordy as a mostly-python programmer these days I have some big rants about the directions HLLs (including python) have been going. That's probably a topic for an in-person rant sometime, which we should definitely do sometime now that I'm getting past some health mess.
