@whitequark the /24 itself was free (well, I had to pay the LIR signup fee and still have to pay the annual LIR fee, so more like "free". Non-LIRs can't use the waiting list and the subnet one receives is PA space, so it always has a LIR as an owner - compared to PI space which only needs a LIR as a sponsor and can be 'owned' by non-LIRs)

Tierpark Bern has young lynxes and they were playing around today so I was able to take some pictures :3

(tl;dr: AFAIK all other RIRs use some sort of resource-based (~"how much legacy IP space do you've got?") membership fee, some RIPE-LIRs don't like the idea and ~"getting rid of (useful) services like RIPE Atlas would save €€€!11" seems to be their primary point.

(at least that's how I understood most of it, please (anyone) correct me if I'm wrong)
