Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty arguing about vi vs emacs at the Reichenbach Falls in "The Final Problem", published #OTD in 1893 in various US newspapers and a few days later in The Strand.
1/ Work is progressing well on the central tower of ESO's Extremely Large Telescope in #Chile 's Atacama Desert. The ELT has a 5-mirror design, and three of them will be housed in the tower you see here. The M4 and M5 mirrors are particularly important to deliver sharp images, as they will counteract atmospheric turbulence and vibrations due to wind or the telescope's mechanisms.
I'm still re-reading and digesting @cwebber's insightful writeup on ATProto (and AP), but this particular line hit hard:
"Then along came Google Reader and... friends, if you are reading this and are of a certain age range, there is a strong chance you have feelings just seeing the phrase "Google Reader" mentioned."
Having an "ñ" in my surname means constantly being gaslit by online forms that tell me my name can't contain special characters only to then tell me that my password must contain special characters, three emojis and a valid chess move.
Carl Sagan would've turned 90 today. Reading 'The Demon-Haunted World' as a teenager profoundly shaped the way I think today. Almost 30 years later the book remains (sadly) relevant...
Just finished rewatching Fringe 😢 I had so much fun looking for hidden references to things I knew were going to happen, and I was genuinely surprised at how many of them there were! But at the same time I had forgotten enough plot details that I was still surprised every now and then. I'm going to miss Walter and his quirky quotes...
The thousands of edge sensors and actuators of ESO's Extremely Large Telescope have been completed! They are key to ensure that that 798 hexagonal segments of the ELT's primary mirror work together as a single 39 m wide mirror, with nanometric accuracy.
My first #aurora pic! I took this last night from Mayrhofen, a town in the Alps in #Austria. I couldn’t really see it by eye due to clouds and some light pollution, but it was definitely there, I imagine it was even brighter at higher latitudes!
If you live close to the #Munich area, save the date! On 3 October we'll welcome everyone to the headquarters of the European Southern Observatory in Garching, as part of the Open House Day in the Garching campus.
1/ It's amazing that we can see details on the surface of some stars, but watching them move is even cooler 🤩
Using ALMA, astronomers have followed the motion of gas bubbles on the red giant star R Doradus over the course of a month. The bubbles are huge, about 75 times bigger than the Sun!
