You're not wrong. --- I ordered from Walmart and Target, only to receive my items in Amazon boxes, shipped from their warehouse.

As for smaller websites... You guessed it, Amazon.

Even if I shop local. I can assure you the back of their store has empty Amazon boxes in the bin.

Fire Fish is now a dead project with the lead developer missing for more than half a year, the remaining developers disbanding, and today, the flagship instance Fire Fish dot Social going OFFLINE.

It is strongly recommended that you migrate your instance to another platform.

    You have options

    * Sharkey
    * Misskey
    * Mastodon

Please consider Fire Fish no longer receives updates, including security.

    Att Fediverse

The flagship instance of Fire Fish is now OFFLINE.

The significance of this event is many of the Fire Fish Developers have previously come forward claiming the lead developer vanished. Unfortunately, the lead developer treated their project as a centralized project, meaning that they were the sole person making decisions, giving no access to accounts or code changes or even donations, despite having a team behind them.

    Alt text should be mandatory.

It seems in your call for helping your instance is now flooded with memes but no one is using alt text.

Anyone either blind or with vision problems is not going to be able to use a screen reader.

There are many people on the Fediverse who share their photo of their cat or dog, but they don't suddenly gain 5,000+ followers with only 4 post (total).

The suspected claim that px dot mathias777 dot com is likely a bot server, seems likely.

In some instances, you have accounts that never posted anything, ever, but have 10,000+ followers.

They're mostly following themselves to give the illusion of being creditable and presumably popular accounts. Most folks will not look past the surface. 🙄

The status quo is the problem.

When you tell people the economy is doing great, most people have no idea what you're talking about. Because most people confuse the quality of living with the economy.

The economy maybe giving the CEO, CFO, Board of Directors, and all their shareholders a good payday. But the spending power of the average "John Doe" sucks.

People are making twice as much, yes, but spending twice as much too. The min wage is still 7.25hr, when it should have been 15, 15yrs ago

Joe Biden did not do anything.

Not from the average American's point of view. From the average American's point of view, he kept the status quo and did not even try.

Where is our healthcare? All green energy? What about universal basic income?

Even if he did not have the support of congress, he could have submitted the bill and started the discussion. We know change is slow, but if you don't try, change does not happen.

Biden did not even try when Americas are fed up with the status quo

"But... but... If you like the BBC News, surely you like The Guardian for a new source."

    No, and neither should you

The Guardian has had an investing take in America media, including, for example, Disney, the parent company of ABC News, for a while now

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guardian_Media_Group

The Guardian also mirrors American news and has reported, much like a mocking bird or copy cat, what American mainstream media has reported.

That includes being inaccurate at times, which I witnessed first hand

I attended a Bernie Sanders convention at UMass in Amherst, Massachusetts, USA.

The stadium was packed, both all the seats and the floor filled with people, including people outside who Bernie Sanders addressed too. Because we could not fit everyone inside.

Traffic was backed up for hours.

Interesting fact, though, is there was this small area people were told not to occupy. Every mainstream media outlet used that for their footage, and falsely claimed that few showed up.

The Guardian, which some of you kept saying is such a great news source, along with PBC (public broadcasting) and NPR and also The Associated Press joined in on that nonsense.

I will always remember the day, I watched the mainstream media lie.

Until I find a creditable alternative, there is just the BBC News. I would like to have more than one source (it would be a good idea). But most of the sources people suggest, I know to be wrong, first hand.

    Hello Fediverse,

It is with great sadness, that I am helping share the news, that the Fire Fish (spelled as one word, FireFish) project has seemingly failed. 😞

FireFish was an upcoming alternative to Misskey or Mastodon. That is the wonderful thing about the Fediverse. There is no centralized authority, or platform, and FireFish was such a platform.

    2 of 2 ... continued...

The failing of FireFish is the project was led in a centralized manner. 1 person making all the choices.

It is important for the Fediverse, that such projects be community projects for this reason.

If you are a FireFish user or administrator, and you liked or preferred the FireFish layout and features, there is hope. The developers who wanted to work together are creating a fork, Catadon.

Good news about Catodon is it is NOT 1 man to maintain control over a Fediverse Project.

My opinion of Catodon taking the lead of FireFish is if you liked FireFish and have the skills to help code, that you get in touch with those now maintaining Catodon.

Both MissKey and Mastodon are successful and will continue to be successful because MANY people contribute. The more who contribute, the more likely the success and longevity of the project.

Mozilla, the makers of the Firefox web browser, now have their own Mastodon instance that people within the Fediverse can join (open to the public).

    What happened to forums?

    2 problems really.

    1) People are social and tribal, and they like to unite where there are the most people with the most activity.

Social media guaranteed both, with everyone knowing someone already there and continuously something and someone new to contribute. You're experiencing that, right now, here on Mastodon.

But it is also why I moved from Mastodon dot social to a different instance

I don't want the Fediverse to mistakenly experience a de facto centralized platform

If almost everyone is on Mastodon dot social or dot online, they'll be under the same umbrella, run by the same creators of the software (they run those 2 instances)

I think they do a great job. I started on Mastodon dot social. Still, I think it wise to branch out a little.

    2) The second problem about forums was often the people who managed forums.

Elon Musk may manage Twitter, but back in the day, I could imagine him being a forum owner.

Forums often formed cliques and often attempted to control the narratives of their community.

They also easily became "echo chambers" of themselves, similar to how Facebook Groups are today.

Outside thinking and creativity was not something you could easily experience on a forum
