@inthehands@DMTomas@Retreival9096 For me the sound of the writing almost always matters, though to different extents. That's not to say I disagree... maybe more that I think compelling writing is always a little bit poetry?
In 2 weeks the Superbowl will be held in the City of Santa Clara.
For the past 3 hours, the normal business of the Santa Clara City Council has been held up by person after person coming forward in public comment to tell City Council and its local police force to stand up and take concrete actions to protect people from ICE.
Council is not allowed to act on an item not on the agenda, but they are talking now about holding a special meeting asap to take action.
After another 3+ hours of impassioned public comment, including a repeat appearance by Batman, City of Santa Clara unanimously passed a set of policies to prevent local collaboration with ICE terrorists during the Superbowl, or at any other time (the World Cup is coming here soon too). #SantaClara#Superbowl#ICEOut
Vote passed, Council will have a full discussion & can take action on Feb. 3. If you live in or near Santa Clara you can submit written public comment, or speak at the meeting. It will be broadcast on video too.
@72mz@skinnylatte Yeah, he's openly called for unhoused people to be incarcerated for the crime of not having a house. The only reason it hasn't happened is that the County not the City runs the jails. He also redirected money from a ballot initiative (which I helped door-knock for!) that was supposed to fund building new affordable housing and services, and instead used it for criminalization and poorly built temporary shelters. Etc, etc.
@evan Marjorie Taylor Green is not a current sitting representative. (Also she's a Christian nationalist who is overtly Islamophobic and anti-Semitic. I don't trust her to support Palestinian people in any way.)
@evan In the US today, There's no such thing as a Republican elected official at the Federal level who will oppose the Gaza genocide, if Trump supports it. Any Republicans who might have taken a principled stand have long since left the party.
@evan@swelljoe Ten years ago, this might have been within the bounds of possibility. Today it is not (except if you allow for the case where the Republican is outright lying & will reverse their position on a dime.)
Any Republican elected with a shred of morality or human decency already left the party years ago.
@lauren@nikatjef Absolutely. And urban as well as rural areas. I'm not usually one to cry for landlords, but this could significantly impact the (relatively) more affordable end of the rental market made up of small scale landlords & subletters.
@emma@twrling yes, terrible framing. The people who create and maintain and market LLMs certainly have goals -- that's where the agency would lie. And they may well have designed the LLMs to hide those goals. But the headline doesn't make that clear at all.
@skinnylatte yeah but it's not as much fun. Something about WIOA funds (workforce development) that the Feds just suddenly decided to delay for no reason.
@MikeDunnAuthor Same problem in San Jose - even developers with already-entitled project won't build them bc rents are not increasing fast enough. It's almost like letting the financial sector control the housing market might have been a bad idea....
