Sorry, not commenting on anything to do with China, so it is a bad analogy. The point you seemed to be making was that new better simpler to operate things are more attractive than kludgy complex things, like Mastodon. And, no argument that is absolutely true. And in many ways Mastodon is deficient, absolutely agreed. The point, and joke which obviously missed, is that those attractive things can come with strings attached.

The only problem with the U9 is that unbeknownst to you, it monitors your thoughts and locks the doors and auto-drives you to a prison labor camp if it determines you are impure. Other than that it is a great car.

Bluesky is a honey trap. Mastodon on the other hand is an open defensible system. There is no real choice if the goal is independence from corporate manipulation and control of content.

Agree with James, because Mastodon and the Fediverse is the only defensible social media space. We learned the hard way with X/Twitter what happens when someone else controls your relationship with your audience. Now we've learned it again with those who went to Threads. And now, people are flocking to Bluesky completely ignoring the obvious risk. Mastodon is bulky and awkward, but it is our last best hope. We should all be focused on what we can do to bring in more people.

Yes, Mastodon is a good source for news and information, but it is also kind of a big family and we strengthen these bonds of community when we share our thoughts and feelings, our worries, and sometimes just play around. Ricki's account is a refuge in these turbulent times, and Mastodon is a better place because she is here.

FICTIONAL DATELINE November 2027: Elon Musk Completes Acquisition of Bluesky LLC

Musk announced his intention to fold the upstart liberal social media network into his X Empire, shocking Democrats and the progressive social media community that moved en masse to Bluesky three years ago after the disastrous 2024 election. "No one could have seen this coming," agreed top content creators on Bluesky assuring their millions of followers, they would stay and fight to keep Bluesky blue.

OK, this was a joke, but it certainly could happen. And the point is joining a corporate social media network you relinquish control of your content. They can adjust the knobs that amplify or turn down your engagement, and can even sever your relationship with your audience at will.

Why are people so confident that they will be safe there? Does anyone know who owns #Bluesky?

Maybe a hint is in the name of the VC firm that lead their recent investment round, "Blockchain Capital".

If you can see this reply, maybe now would be a good time to help organize an exodus to non-billionaire owned open social media. Why not create a Mastodon account? We could use your help.

The easy path lies in escaping from the billionaire overlords into the arms of the VCs. The path is laid out and the welcome is certain. Much more difficult, but ultimately necessary, is to not just give voice to the struggle, but actually participating in building out the open defensible systems necessary to sustain that voice. Otherwise, when we need you most, you will be silenced once again.

To state the obvious. The way to build a resilient social media counterweight to corporate controlled social media is not to join another corporate social media network. The opportunity before us is to build an open system ecosystem that can not be commandeered. And the only real choice for this is Mastodon and the Fediverse.

And for this to happen, influencers will need to use their influence.

Back in 2022 there was a moment of opportunity to create a truly open social media ecosystem. Many people created accounts here and the system struggled deal with the influx. Also, technical features were lacking. So, people mostly went back to X, and ignored the risks associated with using the 'master's tools.' Some later went to Threads, again ignoring the obvious risks.

We should be smarter than that now.

Sure Bluesky seems like the shiny object right now. Lots of Brazilians went there. They are getting good press for their architecture, and so far, it does not seem to be enshittified. But, what happens when some billionaire buys it nine months before the next election?

Thanks to the mostly one way interface from Threads to Mastodon today we saw some discontent among high follower progressive Threads accounts. These influencers, who had migrated from X, are upset that Meta censored and demoted their messages during the election. A few are saying they will now leave Threads, and go to Bluesky. Perhaps they should consider truly non-corporate social media.

X Alternatives: Who owns your new social media network? Threads is owned by Meta. During the election Meta used the Threads algorithm to promote and demote certain content. Bluesky is currently owned by VCs. So far have not seen finagling with content, but is that guaranteed forever?

OK, starting out how do you find accounts to follow?

1. Just click on Explore for posts that are currently getting boosted a lot on your server. If you like something click on the poster, check out their profile page and follow them.

2. On the explore page type in a hashtag like #astronomy for a listing of posts with that hashtag. Or, just type a word and find posts using that word. You can also follow hashtags! 👀

3. Follow people who comment on posts you like.

But with no algorithm, how do you see any content? Isn't your feed dead?

So, this is the real beauty of Mastodon and why so many people really love it. You see only the content from those you follow. No invisible hand is pushing stuff at you. Now, this does take a little work to get up to speed, but really it is not difficult and there are lots of trick to help you. Just find interesting posts and follow the account.
