Things that surprised me the last couple days in Germany: *a lot of people thought I was German, approaching me to ask directions/other (I don’t know what since I don’t speak German!) *the trains in Germany do not run on time. It was a running joke/comment among people about trains being late and I had several delays, including 1 that caused me to miss a connection & nearly my flight. *Many people don’t speak English that well (I’m sure this depends on region/city). #travel#language#germany
Really interesting book. “The Wannabe Fascists: A Guide to Understanding the Greatest Threat to Democracy” by Federico Finchelstein… I appreciated the analysis of differences and similarities among fascism of 80-100 years ago and “wannabe fascism” today and populism over time. Let’s not let the world fall farther into violent authoritarianism. #democracy#fascism#government#bookstodon
This ransomware attack on London hospitals is not getting enough attention IMO. It’s disrupting blood transfusions and operations, and they are asking medical students to urgently donate blood.
Perhaps the one person most responsible for the decline in democracy around the globe, Rupert Murdoch, marries for a 5th time, this time to a retired Russian biologist (retired but 30 years younger than him.
Caitlin Clark shreds Michael Che’s sexist jokes about women’s sports, and gives a shoutout to players who came before her. As a woman working in sports, the “go back to the kitchen/apron” jokes always struck me as the lamest. First because I knew sports better than 99% of guys saying this, so if someone was going to the kitchen, it would’ve been them. Second, you can’t be more creative than that?
The NCAA Championship in women’s basketball tonight is even airing in Spanish along with in English! Wow, when I worked for ESPN Deportes a few years ago, it was the first time the NCAA Championship in 🏈 aired in Spanish. #caitlinclark#Hawkeyes#MarchMadness#ncaaw#basketball
@joeo10 I actually read that it’s the companies who have cargo on the ship that will pay damages, according to ancient maritime law that had it not be ship owners so those on the ship wouldn’t fight over whose cargo to throw overboard! I know this sounds wild but … Not saying there won’t be any taxpayer costs 🙃 but in theory should be paid mostly by companies with cargo onboard
