    @phnt@fluffytail.org @mischievoustomato@tsundere.love yeah, it's been forever since I stumbled upon a niche community/blog full of useful information on a very specific topic the way I used to in the early 2010s.

    For work purposes, besides GitHub it's basically just a library of published papers (if your uni/company pays the ransom).

    @RedTechEngineer@fedi.lowpassfilter.link to be fair, in Newtonian physics, you can record a video of a ball throw, play it in reverse and not really be able to tell that it's in reverse without looking at other things.

    But if space itself is expanding, it's very obvious when you play it in reverse (because you can see the space itself shrinking).

    In general, conservation of energy only really holds on average, and falls apart at extremely large and extremely tiny scales.

    @RedTechEngineer@fedi.lowpassfilter.link actually, I thought about it a bit more and noticed that I immediately contradict myself lol, if wavelength is inversely proportional to energy, there is obviously energy loss and saying it's just spread out doesn't make sense.

    The real answer seems to be much more complicated, where the gist of it is that conservation of energy holds within the same reference frame, not between reference frames. The energy kind of just disappears.

    @RedTechEngineer@fedi.lowpassfilter.link a redshifted photon's energy doesn't go anywhere, it gets spread over a larger area due to the larger wavelength.

    A photon's energy is inversely proportional to its wavelength since the speed is fixed. Speed being constant means that distance and time are proportional. In the context of cosmological redshift, space itself is expanding, stretching out the wave and causing the same amount of energy to be spread over a larger volume.

    I'm not sure what you mean by time being the variable to determine cosmoslogical redshift. The deciding factor is distance, the larger your distance, the more space there is in between, and since each unit of space expands at a constant rate (theoretically), if you have more units of space in between, you see more expansion. Time only comes into play in the sense that it's an expansion "rate". AFAIK the exact way this association with time works is a quantum gravity issue (eg is the expansion rate affected by time dilation?), so kind of an unknown.

    Many alternative theories do try to suggest that perhaps our assumptions on redshift are in some way wrong (eg variable speed of light), causing our distance ladder to be wrong, and that changing some assumption in some way can eliminate dark matter and/or dark energy. But so far they have yet to provide any testable predictions.

    @theorytoe@ak.kyaruc.moe @Wiz@loli.church @gear@gearlandia.haus ah that's fair then.

    Yeah, it's a klipper fork, since the klipper devs are lowkey retarded and holding back a lot of genuinely useful features (eg PID algorithms that don't overshoot).

    I'm a bit obsessed with tinkering with printers, so I've dumped a ton of money into mine, 600W bed heater, beacon scanner, kinematic bed mount, some metal parts, MMU, CPAP, 48V stepper drivers and some custom designed parts...

    @theorytoe@ak.kyaruc.moe @Wiz@loli.church @gear@gearlandia.haus you should switch to kalico, it's so much more convenient to tinker with. Don't have to recompile to update configuration stuff, and can take advantage of cool stuff like the Beacon scanner.

    On my main machine I basically just hit print and it physically tilts the bed to get it as flat as possible, then produces a stupidly high resolution scan of the surface, and auto-calibrates the z-offset. Plus all the usual MMU things like automated filament loading/unloading.

    Also has some less meaningful mods like 48V drivers for the corexy steppers and a CPAP part cooling fan.

    @theorytoe@ak.kyaruc.moe @Wiz@loli.church @gear@gearlandia.haus wiz is so terrified of doing a bit of firmware flashing and configuration that he's left a perfectly good printer untouched for like 2 years now because of it.
