@toba It's true that casting a vote is a quick and easy act, but the careerist professional politicians are banking on us continuing to legitimise their bullshit "democracy" by doing so, and the "lesser of evils" is a terrible and immoral argument based on emotional blackmail while the planet's being destroyed. Some of the most marginalised communities have been the ones who have made the biggest changes - the principle of such community activism is "from each according to their ability, to each according to their need." I offer a much more in-depth analysis of all this here: https://www.mediaactivist.com/manifesto/
@witchescauldron@kathimmel@ophiocephalic That's why the manifesto proposes a completely different way of doing things; a seed that needs planting and watering while the others are composting. You're right, there are too many silos, like I alluded to. The only way forward is this kind of mutual aid media; no hierarchy, no clout-chasers, no commercialism. But that's a major reason "The Intersection" isn't appealing for a lot of media activists: they want to be "seen," they want to be "known." Too much ego, requiring high-profile recognition over a desire for revolutionary media.
@ophiocephalic@kathimmel You have provided such superb resources in the past. But yeah, it can be tricky; I reckon a few more posters could help sum up "The Intersection" and articulate it better. Please tell me about Bonfire, that sounds really interesting!
We (very rightly) talk a lot about safe spaces, and too often we're compromising those principles online. So many people stuck on using Meta and "X" (and, yes, Bluesky) are so fucking miserable in those online places because the codes of conduct are so fucking shitty, and we wouldn't accept them in-person, so we should reject them online. It's not about keeping up with the normies, it's about building the spaces we want the world to be comprised of.
Fuck Bluesky. It right off the bat sounded like something from a Conservative Party focus group or "brainstorm" session of techbro "blue sky thinking" horseshit and has certainly lived down to expectations, from cosplaying decentralisation to cushioning the blow for folks leaving Twitter and wanting something similarly endorsed by commercial forces while we were all here building up some damn fine servers on Mastodon. Get in the fucking sea. Along with Meta's vile shit. Can we please stop trying to reinvent the fucking wheel all because some mindless unoriginal normies hopped onto something and told us it was "cool."
@mlncn I think you've made some absolutely superb points here, and I really appreciate you taking the time to offer them to me! I really wish these were the kinds of discussions more of us were having. I'll have to take some time to get my head around the software you cite here (as it is worth!) and consider how that could complement - or even drive forward - such a network.
@toba Actively diverting energies instead into community, mutual aid, renters unions, workplace organising, intersectional struggles, and direct democracy through more consensus decision-making processes, horizontally structured to reject all forms of hierarchy. Let the system choke on its own fumes while we're all busy building the new world in the shell of the old.
I'm so tired, and downright insulted, by these supposedly "democratic" choices of one individual weirdo agent of the capitalist class or the other. We're not fucking children, you know? We can actually organise our communities quite well and decide things for ourselves, without hierarchy. Despite what horror movies might suggest for dramatic purposes, in times of crisis humans are pretty fucking awesome and bad-ass at helping each other without "leaders" ordering them about. So let's grow up, and get rid of these false choices, keeping us busy while they exploit people and planet for profit.
I forget to mention I founded @freetechproject - and on Wednesday evenings from this week, we're running online workshops for adults across England who want to chill out with a cuppa to hand and learn about - or get help with - tech. You can register and attend any workshop that interests you, or whenever you feel you need questions answered! I'll have my cup of tea ready and hope to catch you there! https://www.freetechproject.com/
