A reminder that "Cancel Culture" (formerly known as consequences, or accountability) is a modern myth. For additional evidence from the world of pro wrestling itself, just look to Hall of Famers such as racist Hulk Hogan, homophobic Ultimate Warrior, or sexist Ric Flair, to name just a few. It's a myth created to shed accountability and avoid consequences. Hey, that's partly why we have people like Trump.
It's WrestleMania weekend, and it's noticeable how WWE (formerly the WWF) are increasingly name-dropping their disgraced ex-boss Vince McMahon. Are they thinking his friend Donald Trump can help stamp out his legal woes? Vince's longtime business partner and estranged wife Linda is helping Trump destroy the Department of Education, and her son-in-law Paul "Triple H" Levesque accompanied her at her Senate confirmation hearing for Secretary of Education while currently running WWE in his father-in-law's absence. Just hours ago he was inducted into WWE's own Hall of Fame that inducted Trump himself several years ago for his involvement with WrestleMania's IV and V and outrageous on-screen storylines that developed his petty approach to debate. What do you bet they can bring back Vince in time to go into the Hall of Fame next year.
What's also hysterical is politicians' sudden faux concern for families of women and children whenever they want to strip our rights away further. They hold no such concern when de-funding shelters or other support systems, and certainly don't express concern that a staggering amount of abuse is carried out behind closed doors within the patriarchal cisheteronormative "family home" so many of them claim to care about. No, they don't call for glass walls on all houses, they just want to remove encryption, self-organised communities, and anything else standing in the way of the surveillance state. What a coincidence!
Of course, even the term "tradition" is weighted in whiteness. It's tradition from the last few hundred years - of colonialism and capitalism. There's little actual long-term history that supports these absurd assumptions, as anyone familiar with the Indigenous people of Turtle Island, for example, will tell you. It's time we made gains in human rights and to do that we must start recognising what white cisheteronormativity is: far from being "normal," it's a creation connected to colonialism, plain and simple; a recent concoction; another form of control.
Whoo we're partying now eh: government-decided identity! That's right folx, the state are deciding whether some of us exist or not. And why? Is it that trans, genderqueer, and gender-nonconforming people's existence affects other people's lives in any way? That rights are pie, where some have them with none left for others? No, of course not. The divide-and-rule culture wars serve a purpose, yes, but it's more than that: the protection and promotion of the cisheteronormative nuclear family is key to the state's hierarchical - patriarchal - system, its privatisation of care into houses with white picket fences in suburban sprawl. It's bullshit, but almost every politician talks about valuing the traditional "family" as much as they value "our troops." It's all part of an order.
the joke is that we now have to sit through several rounds from all media of people explaining that this is all fine and nothing has changed before the news that all institutions will be reading this ruling as time for full exclusion
@trendless Wow. That is a lot of resourcefulness over time but also ultimately wise decision-making when some other folks could have the best information available to them and still make bad decisions. So kudos to you - and positive vibes to you and your family!
@trendless I relate to the comments here. I was home schooled, a vegetarian as a kid, vegan as an adult, a punk/goth, and certainly never fit in, nor had any desire to. In the UK, while the general population seemed distracted by media coverage on the mere "mishandling" of the pandemic, my partner and I (who both caught Covid the first week of March of 2020) were particularly disgusted by that defining moment in August of 2020 when the ruling class let their masks slip with "Eat Out to Help Out (Capitalists)" bribing people to risk their health by going back into restaurants and bars to boost profits -- this was even before we really realised just how sick my partner was becoming with Long Covid, now ME. Our resolve has never wavered and never will. Masking up is not only an anticapitalist act, but also - given ableism and eugenics - an antifascist act as well.
@Tutanota Hi! I've been using Tuta for several years right from the start, but this year switched to Revolutionary then just recently Legend because I love what you do. I'm just wondering what's happened with the Calendar app? I'm running CalyxOS on Fairphone 4 and receiving event notifications infrequently regardless of my settings, not all events are showing on the nifty new widget, and event descriptions have moved off the bottom of the screen when I try to edit. Everything was running very smoothly until this past week though!
Firing folks for, yes, simply respectfully recognising someone's own identity and name is quite some level of oppression that at least demonstrates how far right-wing politicians will attempt to manufacture culture wars to continue to divide-and-rule, but also the importance they attach to the privatisation of care into cisheteronormative nuclear families as part of their range of hierarchical institutions.
