@fkamiah17 That's true, but it's also perfectly natural for people to dislike anyone else speaking for them and making decisions about their lives. Fundamentally, people want to make their own decisions on matters that affect them. Historically speaking, the relatively recent creation of "representative democracy" has really been a measure to placate the masses while still having a hierarchical group (in this case, careerist professional politicians) speak for them. There are many historical examples - for example, from indigenous societies - where society being organised in that way would be considered an absurdity.
House Republicans on Monday unveiled a proposal that could hand Donald Trump a powerful new tool to go after his political enemies: a 389-page draft plan that aims to cut trillions of dollars in government spending -- buried on page 380 of the draft is a section that would enable Trump’s secretary of the Treasury to denounce any nonprofit as a 'terrorist-supporting organization' and strip it of its tax-exempt status. https://theintercept.com/2025/05/12/trump-nonprofit-killer-tax-cuts/
"Murray Bookchin argued that hierarchy is socially produced, not natural. Patriarchy, he wrote, was the first system of domination — a blueprint for later forms of class rule, racial supremacy and state power." This is an absolutely crucial point in understanding culture wars like these. Splitting groups into "superior" and "inferior" categories convinces people from an early age that hierarchy is "natural" and therefore acceptable, thus we have passivity towards state power through so-called *representative democracy" (a contradiction in terms).
"There’s no doubt that the garbage served up in the government’s Pathways to Work Green Paper is a Tory fantasy. A sentiment of ‘punish those cripples’, all shrouded in some nineteenth century moralising bullshit about helping people help themselves." https://freedomnews.org.uk/2025/05/12/labours-sweet-little-lies/
AI won’t be killing us. People using AI will be killing us. (They already are but it’s only Brown people in the Middle East being murdered so polite white folks in the West couldn’t care less right now. They will soon.)
@thatkatharine It's funny how after all this time a lot of us are becoming so well-versed in so many different Covid safety precautions, we put governments to shame! However, dental care remains a frustrating area of unavoidable vulnerability, as @treehouseofhorror and I were saying just the other day! (Hope you all come through it as well as possible!)
