I wonder how many harmless phrases in Regency and Victorian literature were euphemisms at the time for something else. What seems innocent to us could have been entirely different to them.
"Mr. Darcy is a gentleman of substantial .. ahem ... property"
"Mr. Darcy is exhausted from a passionate ... discussion about the quality of the horses with the groomsman"
