I think the problem is *big instances*.
Until this year, I could read the entire local TL of chaos.social within ~10min/day and it was lots of fun, because it felt like a walk through one's home village and occasionally meeting more or less well known neighbors.
With multiple posts /min this has lost a bit of it's former feeling, admittedly.
For the global timeline, I agree, it has never been of great use to me. ??
