Look at the homeless and vehicle-dwelling population in your city. You're going to find A LOT of old people. Because Social Security and SSDI/SSI do not pay enough to live on to be able to even use all of your income on rent. If "the older generation" had all the money, they wouldn't be there

Every time you are asked to provide accessibility and resent "more work", use that feeling to reflect on how much more work it is for people WHO ARE DISABLED to do the work an ableist society requires for just about every interaction in our day (bureaucracy re disability/poverty, inaccessible communication/infrastructure/culture/events/school/work/hospitals/emergency response, etc). and join us in working for systemic change that will make it easier for all of us. #Ableism

Something that annoyed and alarmed me about our public higher ed systems in California was the extent to which students were forced into giving for-profit corps their data.

In CA we have the resources to have solutions crafted by public employees paid a decent wage & benefits in comparison to the private sector. Not have it filtered strictly to the top. Yet our community colleges, CSU, and UC pimp students out to for-profit corps - more sources of data breaches.

If you are abled & find providing alt text & image description to be a barrier:

Disabled people are routinely asked by our power structures & by abled people (even our friends/family) to go through additional physical, mental and emotional barriers daily.

So if you think this small barrier of being asked to provide equitable alt text keeps abled ppl from doing things, it's good to extend that thinking to the ableist way our society is constructed & what the effect of that is on disabled ppl.

Abled people: the primary function of the alt text field is not to act as a little joke for other sighted people. It's not a fucking easter egg despite that having been normalized by XKCD.

You can certainly have a sense of humor in the alt text field just as you do the text text field, BUT after you've actually provided equitable alt text & img description. Transcribe the fucking text that sighted people are given in the image and describe any other relevant non-text parts of the img.

Follow-up appt today in which I discovered the Student Health pharmacy for our public university has such a tight partnership with Anthem/Blue Cross that if you have any other insurance instead of SHIP (which is Anthem), you have to pay 100% out of pocket. They will not bill even Medicare.

I finally got the night guard that was sent to me in the mail. It was sent with the mold on it. I was a little excited to have the mold, but when I pried the night guard off it, I saw that it was very carelessly handled and a lot of the teeth were smashed off before it was even packed.

So if I want a mold to see what my teeth would look like if I got into a vicious fight, I've now got it.

I've thought about using the cargo quadricycle to take my propane tank to the hardware store for a refill but didn't do it because it felt hard to do safely.

That didn't worry this person, who has put the tank (about 1/6 the size I have) on a furniture dolly improvised into a trailer. #CarryShitOlympics #BikeTooter
