@DeliaChristina of course there are good and productive uses of it, and numerous social benefits. But you are not a typical user, and probably have an educational and critical thinking buffer that younger people don’t have. I’ve been horrified by how fast bad information propagates on tiktok.

What has always concerned me about Tiktok is how incredibly passive its users have to be to be seduced into making endless swipes through bottomless pits of ephemeral content posited as art or information. Have you ever watched someone doing it? It’s like they’re in a trance.

@joeo10 I’m aware. I’m generally in agreement with @mmasnick, but I diverge here. It’s not a ban, but a forced sale. No one would support letting Putin buy Comcast or ABC news. Tiktok isn’t just any business. It’s a massive cultural influencer without precedent. The risks are not imaginary.

To be honest, I’ve always thought it was ludicrous that we allowed China and others to own so much of our core manufacturing base. To have it own a massive propaganda vehicle like TikTok is just handing a sly and dangerous adversary the keys to the country. It’s just stupid.

Everyone I know has this romantic idea that everything’s going to work out okay. That democracy’s going to prevail in the United States. But they have no plan B if that hunch doesn’t pan out. This is what worries me.

I’ve dated and even slept with phonies like Katie Britt back in the day. They fake everything. Especially conversation.

Most of this poll erosion of Biden has little to do with the propaganda coming from Fox News and everything to do with the constant drumbeat of negativity coming from the left. It’s the revenge of Bernie Sanders at the worst possible time. Wake up folks. Trump is an existential threat.

I am so weary of the caterwauling from the left about everything the right does. They’ve been planning and strategizing this assault for decades. We have done almost nothing to counter program their manipulations. Complaining about it isn’t going to stop them. We have to devise effective actions.

So I saw the surgeon today. He gave me an A+ for my adaptive devices and knee scooter designs, but a D- for leg elevations. If I don’t do better by next week, he’s not taking the stitches out and I won’t be able to walk on the leg. But I’ve set up the house now so I can basically do little for the next week but stay iced and elevated.

If a BlueSky instance appears on an AP federated network via a bridge, why would this be structurally any different than any other AP-based fedi instance that could be defederated if that was an AP admins choice? Or is the main objection really just the idea that the connections are being made with a culture war nemesis?

Souzzi has a 10 point margin with 72% reporting in #NY3. If that holds, it’s crushing, and as important as the win itself.

If I am not mistaken, thus far, Republicans have now lost every single special election since Dobbs. I hope the other races follow suit tonight.
