Myke (mware@mstdn.ca)'s status on Sunday, 04-Feb-2024 01:46:25 JST Myke @feld there's a long walk from lenses, AE, AF, etc - to silently superimposing.
We just found out we're quite a ways down the slippery slope that we thought we were still peering at.

Myke (mware@mstdn.ca)'s status on Friday, 02-Feb-2024 23:30:44 JST Myke @johnefrancis you missed the worst part (tho best now, by virtue of decommissioning...) I'm yanking Miktrotik trash out.

Myke (mware@mstdn.ca)'s status on Friday, 02-Feb-2024 23:30:43 JST Myke @johnefrancis aside from leaking LLDP? or using Linux 2.6 kernel? or lazy NAT tracking on their firewall? or a lack of CSA/UL approval? What about ultra-dumb LED layouts on the PoE switch ports? (PoE at top, link/activity at bottom)

Myke (mware@mstdn.ca)'s status on Friday, 02-Feb-2024 23:22:33 JST Myke @disarray @feld we're working on deleting the copper outright! That specific crime is an unknown patch to us, we'll probably have to use scream-testing to figure out where it goes.

Myke (mware@mstdn.ca)'s status on Friday, 02-Feb-2024 23:15:39 JST Myke Ah garbage day; nothing like taking out the trash.
[This legacy site was built by a now-defunct ISP 20+ years ago, and we've been converting all the customers to GPON.] #TodaysOffice

Myke (mware@mstdn.ca)'s status on Tuesday, 30-Jan-2024 05:23:59 JST Myke Random question: does anyone want to come work with & for me? I'm booked for all of 2024 already, more is coming.
Everything from ISP, sysadmin, netops, structured cabling, fibre, VoIP, security (PACS/CCTV/etc), climbing towers & riding skyjacks, datacentre, deskside, construction…
What are you good at? What do you want to get good at?
Any interest?
Most work is within 150KM of Ottawa, also GTA.
PT/FT/freelance/RoE, whatever. I'm flexible - although not planning on relocating anyone.

Myke (mware@mstdn.ca)'s status on Saturday, 27-Jan-2024 02:58:51 JST Myke @feld I appear to have a word there, yes.
Pre-fab is pretty much the only way I’m willing to do 10G on copper. Either CAT6A or DACs. Otherwise GTFO. It's not worth it.

Myke (mware@mstdn.ca)'s status on Saturday, 27-Jan-2024 02:57:13 JST Myke @feld and in early/mid 2023, supply of ethernet testers was low, the notion of paying a lot, waiting months, only to blow it up on qualification testing... not appealing.
Then I landed a gig where the customer demanded 10G over copper, so it was worth buying.
That said, I'm recommending 10G over copper for a VERY VERY VERY long time; only use might be for WAPs. Otherwise just use glass.

Myke (mware@mstdn.ca)'s status on Saturday, 27-Jan-2024 02:30:59 JST Myke @feld sure, but I need to test 4-pair 54V lines feeding things like AirFiber, for example.
I've got one ultra-cheapo, which gives measurements, but not correct analysis - this is only 2-pair 24V Passive:

Myke (mware@mstdn.ca)'s status on Saturday, 27-Jan-2024 02:22:53 JST Myke The PockerEthernet is still a fantastic tool, it's just too fragile for field work. That said, the LinkIQ is pretty good too.... just 20X the price of the Pock…
Most importantly, neither of them blow up with passive PoE, nor 4-pair PoE.
