@aral I asked this on my timeline, but it would be interesting to hear your opinion. Can we really block Meta?

I've seen people in discussions, who have Mastodon accounts AND Threads accounts.

If one of those Mastodon accounts boost a picture from, let's say me, I assume different Threads accounts can boost it too, even if I block Meta.

Meta then gets ahold of art, pictures, faces etc from the Fediverse through Threads, and they can then train their AI on the pictures.

What do you think?

If you just migrated from #Meta or #Twitter, here's some of the best advice I got when I moved here, and still use.

There's no algorithm on the Fediverse, so it's all about who you follow, not who follows you.

Use the web interface if you want to edit your posts easily, combined with an app.

Look at # you want to follow, follow someone interesting, look at who they are following, follow some of those people. Unfollow and follow # and people, until you have a nice feed for yourself to look at.

@cbt I am not a tech person, but I still see the obvious danger in inviting Meta to the fediverse.

I don't see why there should be anything wrong with people who recognize that danger.

And there's not necessarily anything wrong with those of you who doesn't look at that danger the same way we do, you might just be uninformed.

But maybe it's time to get informed, and then you can come back and try again.

@aral Imo the consequences are already showing.

When an admin declares support for Meta, they might as well post “I want to tell you all I sold you to the company most of you just fled from. They offered me a lot of money - and you all little ants and your opinions about protecting your data etc, never were especially important to me/us anyway. Cheers!”

I think people will leave instances that doesn’t protect them, some might look at self hosting etc, some might leave the fediverse for good.
