just some more thoughts on this. I have encountered many men, especially white ones, who have claimed some variation of "humanity sucks irreparably." Which is so very interesting, because our society writ large is constantly centering white men and capitulating to their needs, wants, and fragility.

(1/?) I think it's important to note that among the Smithsonian Institutions that the authoritarians have a problem with, it is specifically the #NationalMuseumofAfricanAmericanHistoryandCulture (NMAAHC).

Mostly just that one. Most of the other SI museums hold up narratives of white supremacy just fine. You don't see them decrying the #NationalMuseumofNaturalHistory as "woke."

If you want to support the Smithsonian during this time, it is imperative that you be specific.

Having had personal experience working at the #NMNH and its museum support center, I can tell you that it is very much anti-Black and I have a whole documented saga wherein I am attempting to demand accountability from the white men in NMNH's anthropology department whose actions directly harmed me.

I will also say that when I visited the #NationalMuseumoftheAmericanIndian, I witnessed white people speaking over and even interrupting Indigenous people during our tour.

I am grateful for ppl like Merlin and others who did threads in my absence. For these last days of August I would like to put forward a #BlackAugust reparations thread geared toward supporting Black folks who use this platform. You may know in the current authoritarian presidential administration in the US, Black people and especially Black women have borne the brunt of job loss and job insecurity. It is, as our elders have said, a condition of being "the last hired and the first fired." (2/3)

It's been a long year, y'all. Earlier I wanted to and announced I would start another Juneteenth reparations thread, but, well, I was all but burnt out. I can't say that I'm back at 100% now, and I will likely never return to posting on this account with the frequency or amount of commentary that I have done in the past BUT acknowledging that there's a good number of followers on here, I still want to leverage that to help solidify mutual aid opportunities on this platform. -compile resources available in your locality and provide this info to students.

-cover your ass bc this hostile administration is actively searching for reasons to punish empathy

-as private citizen create a rainy-day fund for in case students need legal services. International students have largely been told as individuals to lawyer up but that is not financially feasible for many, if not most.

-inform yourself of the unique situation international students are in at your particular institution.

-offer clarity to your students: will your dept/institution be willing to step in if there's a visa revocation? Will there be online options to complete degree programs?

-Some international students feel completely unsupported by their departments rn. It is both relatively easy and immediately impactful to indicate to your students that you care about their circumstances, and to foster connections with them

-as a private citizen, tap into community organizations advocating

Getting familiar/involved w the organizations in or near ur community that have been putting in work

Actually engaging with the politically disengaged with the intent to listen and understand instead of being so unpleasantly superior that they actively avoid u

Donating to and sharing someone's need asks; helping build a digital infrastructure of mutual aid

Participating in consumer blackout movements (like last Friday)

Etc. Not hard

What I really need 3rd parties to do rn is NOT evaporate into the ether, and take on the opportunity that arises with folks who are obviously jaded with this system.

As a genderqueer Black person with the capacity to give birth living in Texas, I'm finding a lot of you white liberal cishets to be overly dramatic. You just woke up in the same country we had yesterday. Instead of despairing that you don't know what to do, pull your self together and get in where you fit in. Stop depending on others to do your political work for you and become involved beyond telling people who they should vote for every 4 years.
