I may have asked here before, but asking again: can anyone recommend a VPS hosting provider, that is a worker-owned co op and ideally uses renewable energy?
Was musing somewhere on here the other day — we could take the idea of “personal data servers” from Bluesky and make switching your actual instance around as easy as migrating accounts. But the protocol would need to be designed for that.
ActivityPub is great, but I think some things need to be added or changed.
Adding pub/priv keys for signing messages is another thing to learn from Bluesky, maybe.
I'm once again thinking about #solar -powered servers for doing things like #selfhosting or putting up a Fediverse presence.
Of course, most web apps are not built with this in mind, and they're not necessarily power-stingy nor are they designed for an intermittent internet connection or power cycling. (Although for the latter, Heroku's old 12-factor app idea is pretty in line with running out of power each day.)
What apps or frameworks might do #solar powered server better? cc @solaradmin
Trying to install Windows on a laptop that had Linux on it (and worked fine), for a nonprofit office that needs Windows, Word + Excel + Powerpoint, and a browser. Bringing it in with Linux was a nonstarter, even on Ubuntu with the various FOSS alternatives as icons on the desktop.
So I have to ask if anyone has advice. I’ve tried Windows 10 and 11 ISOs. It always fails when I do “custom install,” delete partitions, and tell it to install. Secureboot is on & keys reset, TPM on. BIOS is updated.
