This is amazing! #NeilHalloran, possibly my most favorite data storyteller on YouTube, has created another video about the eradication of #smallpox.
P.S. If you’re not familiar with his work, watch his World War II video.

A non-review of #Civ7 from the point of view of playing as #JoséRizal, one of the game’s new playable leaders:
“It presents an astonishingly eclectic range of historical figures to play as… and it gives each of them the same set of verbs. Even worse, it further homogenizes them by making them compete for the same goals via the same means, as if a hypothetical template civilization existed by which all others should be judged.”
I love that one of my go-to typefaces, Alegreya, designed by Argentinian typeface foundry Huerta Tipográfica and distributed as open source fonts, features three different and very expressive #ampersands across its variants.

John scanned nearly 13 thousand photos and have uploaded them to his #Flickr account: https://www.flickr.com/photos/johntewell/
John Tewell, an American living in the #Philippines 🇵🇭 and widely known within the Filipino cultural heritage circles for collecting late-19th and early 20th-century photographs of the Philippines, sadly passed away.

Zoologists from #ZooLiberec in the #CzechRepublic 🇨🇿 collaborate with the Philippine Eagle Foundation 🇵🇭 to save the #PhilippineEagle 🦅 from extinction.
#TheDress viral photo will be 10 years old next month. And to me it still looks like a #WhiteAndGold dress and not #BlueAndBlack. I can’t adjust my perception to make it look blue and black unlike with other reversible optical illusions.
Today is Rizal Day, a public holiday in the #Philippines 🇵🇭 honoring the martyrdom of national hero #JoséRizal. Rizal was executed on 30 December 1896 after being charged for sedition and rebellion against the Spanish colonial government.
As a simple token, here is a photo I took in 2017 of a historical marker installed by the Philippines’ national historical agency in Berlin at the site where Rizal stayed while writing his first novel, Noli Me Tangere.
What consumerist capitalist dystopia are we living in that there exists “Amazon influencers” and they sue each other? #smh
“The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that it was the first time since records began in 1951 that so many storms co-existed in the Pacific basin in November.”

While I wasn’t affected too much by recent storms / #typhoons (at worst it was just rainy weather), the incoming #ManYi / #PepitoPH is likely the closest to approach #Manila, #Philippines 🇵🇭 .

“Trump has also said he will once again remove the U.S. from the Paris climate accord, under which countries agreed to try to limit warming to under 1.5 degrees C and ‘well under’ 2 degrees C.”
I wouldn’t dream of trying this back in 2010, but I think the state of JavaScript + Canvas is good enough that I could do this now.
The original party render script uses the Cairo graphics library and HTML5 Canvas is essentially an almost direct counterpart.

#30DayMapChallenge 🗺️ Day 5️⃣: A journey
Back in 2010, the #OpenStreetMap #Philippines 🇵🇭 community held a mapping party in Cavite.¹ To show off the event, I created an animation using the popular #Python OSM party render² script:
After 14 years, I thought that this would be an excellent animated map to recreate using current #HTML5 technologies. And it looks good!

Where’s the lie?
This is a political drawing by Hermann-Paul published in 1899 in Le Cri de Paris, a French magazine, and was created as a commentary on the Boxer Rebellion.
I finally processed and then uploaded this 1875 map (annotated in 1902) of the #Philippines 🇵🇭 to #WikimediaCommons.

Who else has a soft spot for text figures, also known as lowercase or old style numerals, in #typefaces?
They look beautiful when used properly. Of course, they are hardly appropriate in coding fonts and financial/accounting contexts.
#MetroManila, the #Philippines’ 🇵🇭 national capital region, has just been placed under a state of calamity by the Metro Manila Council (MMC) and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) due to extensive #flooding. 🌧️

Did you know that there is a 1:1 scale replica of the world-famous #Shibuya Scramble intersection that can be rented by TV and film productions located 80 km northwest of Tokyo in the city of #Ashikaga? The real intersection is so busy that nobody can close it down for controlled filming.
This set was notably used in the hit Japanese TV series Alice in Borderland.

#NileRed already does some really dangerous chemical experiments 😱 but this one is kinda more insane.
